My big girl has taken to running around after baths with her hooded towel on, yelling "super girl!"
And for Halloween she first wanted to be a bat-kitty. But then she decided to be a "super girl cat." So last night I made capes for the girls. Their favorite color is purple, and I had a purple table cloth left over from my wedding reception. I didn't have enough fabric to do it the way most instructions I found that had a decent flowy drape indicated (they all wanted about 60" square, folded in quarters. I had 44" square, already hemmed.
So I did this:
- Folded one corner down around her shoulders to decide how far down to put the neck hole.
- Measured her neck circumference (12") and cut a circle that size, using a bowl as a template.
- Cut from the middle of the circle to the corner. I was going to cut this off, but before I figured out how, I realized that the funny shaped fabric here could make serviceable ties for holding the cape on.
- Had her stand with it on so I could mark where the cape fell for a basically even drape all the way around at 24" from her neck. This makes it hit at the back of her knee; decently long without being hard to run around and kneel in.
- Cut off where I marked it.
- Figured out my rolled hem foot and finished all the newly cut edges.
Even had enough fabric left to make one for her little sister. It is SO much easier to complete projects like this and make things now that I have a sewing machine (Bernina Record) that is not "special needs." I actually look forward to using it because it stitches like a dream.
