Want to hear the sounds my prayer makes?

A couple of weeks ago, I assisted in the nursery at the Catholic church. It's fully a babysitting activity, as opposed to the activity, playtime, snacks, and short lesson that goes on in my church. One bilingual little girl showed me how she said her prayer in Spanish. I showed her the sounds my prayer makes when I say it in German.

Himlische Vater
Wir danken dich fuer die Speise
Und bitten dich sie zu segnen
In Namen Jesu Christi,
Amen.

This weekend, my brother was home from his mission to South Carolina. My sister and her children were at my parents' house when we arrived to visit. The two year old ran up calling out my name, and hugged my legs, then immediately wanted me to come draw with her. Meanwhile, my husband got no lovin' :) He was a little bugged that I wasn't ready to leave when he was. After all, I was just barely getting into some adult conversation after having spent about two hours (it seemed) picking out books with, and reading them to my niece. Our first book haul resulted in all German books. She didn't seem to mind that I read them in a language she doesn't understand.

She calls my parents "Oma" and "Opa" and she has been taught the same blessing on the food that all of my siblings knew. That has been the extent of her bilingual education, and she seems to take "other sounds" all in stride. I really enjoyed the books. They were nearly all in verse form. Most of them had been read to me at her age. Lovely memorable books!

She selected a very wordy version of Snow White and Rose Red, and I adlibbed the story for her. At the end, I had the bear-turned-prince fall in love with both girls (since in the picture, he had an arm around each) "...and they all lived happily ever after in a polygamous relationship". The end. My youngest brother was looking on and laughed so hard he had to leave, and missed the next book.
