Right Next To Me
“Beep-beep-beep “
Nino was awakened by the sound of beeping. “Can someone do something about the beeping sound? My head is already killing me.” His head felt like it was being drill by a jackhammer, unrelentingly. When no one seemed to be around he decided to stop it himself, though he didn’t really know where the sound is coming from. He tried to open his eyes, and regretted it soon after, everything felt fuzzy.
Someone walk in close to where he laid, the figure towered over him covering most of the lights. He knew it was a person but couldn’t identify exactly, it seemed his eyed lost its ability to focus as of the moment.
The person came closer - ”If this is a serial killer, I’ll surely be dead.” - and reached, he felt something was taken from his armpit.
“37.9” The voice announced. Nino still can’t manage to process what’s going-on. All he could remember was he was with the other members at the greenroom ready to head-out when suddenly everything went blank.
“Hey, brat. How are you feeling?” Nino smiled inwardly, there’s only one person cold enough to call him brat in a sickbed.
“Hi, J. I don’t feel well”
“Of course you’re not. You’re running a fever and got everyone worried, idiot”
“What happened?”
“You collapsed. The doctor said it’s from exhaustion and malnutrition.” Jun informed with a clear irritation in his voice.
“Did I hit my head? It really hurts.”
“No, that’s probably caused by Aiba-chan shaking you so much when you weren’t waking.”
“Aibaka~” Nino sighed. He would have get up and killed the man if it would actually bring satisfaction to his present ordeal.
“You couldn’t blame him. You collapsing in the greenroom, Sho-kun panic like a madman - shouting to the moon and back - when Aiba yelled that you might be dead. And might just add that it’s the longest time Riida didn’t dozed-off, not until the doctor assured that you’re okay.” Nino wanted to feel amused with Jun’s story on how the other members were easily rattled, but these sorts of things were not a laughing matter, especially to Jun.
“I’m really sorry for causing everyone trouble.”
“They’re all good. I already compensated them with the chance to borrow one of your games.”
“Is this punishment?”
“From your limited edition collection.”
“It is punishment.”
“No, it’s a prelude.”
Jun helped him up into a sting position, every moment increases the discomfort, arranging the pillows so that he’d feel a bit comfortable to sit. He was handed a capsule and what looks like a glass of water.
“Drink.” He wanted to tell that he’s not much of a medicine type of sick person. A good rest and his game console can make him feel better in an instant. But he knows that when Jun uses shorter phrase he means business. Honestly he no energy to argue, so he took the medicine and drank the supposed to be water.
“Shit! What’s that? Herb?” He suddenly regrets having Jun as his nurse. Where does he get these things anyway?
“It will help you regain your energy.” Taking the glass from him and heading out.
There were a lot of noises - open and closing of cabinets and the refrigerator, knife hitting a chopping board which he actually forgotten he has. He had been living out of convenient store pack lunch, yet again, since his schedule had been packed again - drama, PV practice, PV shooting, and other TV appearances.
Jun appeared wearing an apron, well if there’s one reason he’d be okay being in sickbed was that he got to see the stoic man cook for him, wearing an apron, carrying a homemade food.
“Looks delicious”
“I do hope. It’s all I can manage from your empty fridge” Jun placed the tray on the side table.
“I didn’t mean the porridge” He point out.
“Yeah?”
“Definitely”
“How about you flirt when we actually could do something?”
“Is that a challenge?”
“No”
“You’re such…” He would have continued to tease if Jun didn’t look that he was about to snap at him.
Nino knew that when Jun snapped at him it’d boil down to him not taking care of himself. And he sure knew that the man had seen the empty pack-lunch and cup noodles that he’d been eating for the past few weeks - he’s not going to touch that subject, not in this state.
“Can you eat on your own?” Jun asked in a very concerned voice.
“Yeah” Taking the spoonful of porridge. For some reason, though he’s sick the porridge taste really good - as expected from Matsumoto Jun.
The room remained quiet.
Nino was busy eating the most delicious porridge for a sick person; Jun was also busy rummaging his closet. He wanted to ask what the man was trying to find, but he couldn’t help him any better because he didn’t know either - he’d shove his clothes in a space that it could fit in. The only thing in his house that was actually given time to organized was his game collections - ask about that and he could point out everything closed-eyes, and he’s so proud of it.
After emptying his bowl, surprising himself, he called-out to the busy man mumbling about clothes must be arranged by color and used - winter clothes should have long been kept in a storage box.
“Hey J!” He repeated when he was ignored the first time.
“What?!” Jun looking irritated, which Nino answered with a smile.
“I’m sorry, what is it?” Jun questioned softly, realizing he lashed out wrongly.
“Mind telling what’s this all about” He gestured with his hand back and forth from the closet to the luggage full of properly folded clothes.
“Oh! I need to pack your things”
“Because?”
“You’ll be staying with me”
“If you’re asking me to live with you, I need a ring on my left ring finger first”
“Nice try, only until your schedule is manageable again.”
“Damn!” Jun’s laugh reverberated around the room.
“Jerk! People are more emotional when sick” He pointed-out to the man who wasn’t showing any sign of stopping.
“Your birthday is coming. Mind keeping an open schedule?”
“I need to lie down.” He announced, not minding the question hanging in the air. Because though he had been throwing the words of living together with Jun, the man knew that he was the scaredy-cat of the real deal.
Jun walked towards the bed, helping him removed the pillow at his back for him to lie back down. Jun adjusted his pillow and blanket, making sure that he was comfortable enough to toss and turn.
“I just need to head to the grocery later. We leave after that, okay?” Jun declared.
“Hey Jun, about…” He hesitantly continued.
“It’s alright; we’ll get there when we’re ready.”
“But…”
“Nino, all I need is that you’re right next to me. Everything becomes trivial.” Jun declared, looking at him in his eyes intently.
“Such a sweet talker”
“Rest” Jun kissed him on his head before taking a seat on the chair beside the bad, waiting for him to fall asleep.
”Right next to me”, the phrase repeatedly swamp Nino’s mind before he dozed off.
