With the sentencing over, the Enterprise would soon be leaving Sha'Kwai and returning to its original mission. By this point, Jim was ready for it. He wanted off the planet, his wanderlust getting the better of it. It was the longest stretch of time he had spent in once place minus his years at the Academy - always moving, always traveling, wanting ( Read more... )

Hank figured now was as good a time as any to see the Captain. Maybe he'd find out who his section head would be. So he dressed in regulation reds, and presented himself. "Captain Kirk?"

Jim looked up from the PADD he was studying, and looked the man up and down once before assuming it was another new comer to his ship. The uniform was a bit of surprise - the rest hadn't bothered since they hadn't had to. "That's me." He stood up, offering out his hand. "You are...?"

"Lt. Henry Pierce, sir," Hank responded, shaking Kirk's hand firmly. He didn't indulge in any 'who has the stronger grip games. "I've been assigned to your ship."

Well that confirmed that. "Good to meet you." In his head he ran through files, trying to pull up the name. "Which department were you assigned to?" That would help limit it down.

"Security, sir," Hank responded. "I was wondering if you had assigned our section head? I've heard that the last one was dismissed from his position."

"Actually, you could meet him. His name's John Grimm, you'll find he's a damn good man." Now he could picture Hank's profile in his mind. "Security's under a tight reign right now. You fuck around," his tone went deathly serious, "and I'll have you tossed out an airlock."

"I never fuck around where lives depend on me," Hank said seriously. He wasn't intimidated. Just disturbed that that's what Captain Kirk seemed to expect from his security personnel. "That's just immoral and irresponsible. If that's what you're used to from security I'm very pleased you're getting a new section head."

"It isn't what I'm used to. It's what I suddenly found myself in the middle of," Jim said calmly, pointed. "I won't let it ever happen again on my ship."

"Of course sir," Hank said. "Is there anything specific that you are concerned about with regards to my file or security duties at large that I'm in the need to know about?"

"Nothing right now, except that I'd like you to talk to Grimm before you come on board. Otherwise, I'm glad to meet you. Tell me about yourself." Already he was starting a mental file on this man - nothing to do with his business or professional life but just Henry, the man.

"I will be more than happy to do so sir. What would you like to know?" Hank asked curiously. "You should have my vitals in my file." This was not covered in classes. He did want to meet this Grimm character. It sounded like he wasn't formally affiliated with Starfleet, as there was no rank.

"Not your vitals." Jim shook his head with a frown. "I mean... you. Hobbies? Play any sports? Speak any languages?"

"I rope cattle," Hank said. "Ride like a centaur in general. I've enough Spanish and Chinese, Mandarin, to get myself into some real trouble. I've done a little bronco busting but not much."

"Rodeo? Or just for the hell of it?" The idea of it seemed amazing - other than the fact he couldn't ride to save his life.

"I did a little rodeo. Enough to know that's not what I want to do with my life, prize money is nice, but the bruises and broken bones tend to hurt." Hank responded. "Also, my family has owned a working cattle ranch since the 1900's so the cattle roping is part of the job. My sister is probably gonna be a barrel racer. She's amazing, even at seven." He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a capture of her up on a pony to show off.

Jim studied it - families always interested him. He grinned slightly. "I bet someday she'll be amazing." He studied Hank himself. "You close to your family?"
