Room 222 | Saturday Night

Feb 15, 2014 19:30

Jim hadn't realized something was weird on the island today. That was probably because he'd slept pretty much all day and then lazed around bed until...pretty much right now. He'd finally gotten himself out of bed and gotten himself dressed. He was thinking about going out, maybe seeing what was going on in town or maybe even finding a place to ( Read more... )

Dom leaned his head into Jim's door. Part of that was just about being social; he was also curious about Gert's whole 'you're from another universe' theory.

He started on what was the less weird topic of conversation.

"So, I think I got to feed your kid pancakes this morning."

"He's a freaking black hole," Jim said, turning to look at the unfamiliar face in his doorway. "Sorry. Did he behave?"

"He helped inspire my kid to eat pancakes until he practically barfed, but besides that -- yeah, he did," Dominic answered. "Just wanted to apologize for the potential sugar high."

Jim waved a hand. "Nah, nothing to apologize for. If he ate that much, he deserves his stomachache. My kid, not yours. And if he's high on sugar, I'll kick him out."

Such a good dad.

"Your parenting skills are awesome," Dominic deadpanned. "I think Gert'd kill me if I kicked mine out."

"You a friend of Gert's, then?" Jim asked, raising an eyebrow. "I don't think I've seen you around. Unless I have and you're currently wearing a different face."

Well. There went the possibility Gert was the randomly crazy one.

"Fuck," Dominic muttered. "Yeah, Gert said there was a different universe thing going on. Except if you ask me, I've been here a year and the rest of you all slipped a gear or something."

He shook his hair out of his eyes. "My name's Dominic," he said -- more as a point of politeness than because he expected it to mean anything to Jim.

"Dominic?" Jim frowned and then shook his head. "My kid's middle name is the same. Named after my girlfriend's dad."

He had to blink at that one.

"Jesus. Anyway yeah, sorry man. Don't recognize you. You a hermit or something? Keep to yourself?"

"I was named for my mom's dad, kind of."

It wasn't all that relevant.

"And I dunno, I do stuff when I'm interested?" Dom didn't think of himself as a hermit, but he did vanish into his room to paint for long stretches. "I work at the diner. Come bug you once in a while when I'm bored. Gert says the me that she knows is some chick named Bay."

He shrugged. "I'm hoping come Monday, I'm in the right place and so is she."

"Yeah, I know Bay," Jim said, nodding. "She's a good friend of mine. I sent her some flowers for Valentine's Day."

And now Bay was apparently MIA? Jim frowned.

"Sounds like a timeline slip or something," Jim said thoughtfully. "And somehow you were the only one caught up in it?"

Which didn't make a lot of sense.

"I got the flowers," Dominic volunteered. "They were pretty, but I was kind of wondering why you sent them, man."

He borrowed a desk chair. "I guess?" he said thoughtfully. "Everybody else seems pretty much the same as at home. You, Gert, Joker, Taylor..."

"You got my flowers?" Jim blinked. "Bay sent me flowers too. So, does that mean, you sent those?"

His head was going to start hurting soon.

"The same except I don't remember you at all," Jim pointed out. "So, not completely the same."

Dominic's head was already hurting, to go by the way he rubbed his knuckles across it.

"I didn't," he said. "She must have sent them before the time warp thing happened. And yeah, the not-remembering-me thing is kind of a big difference."

"That's super weird," Jim said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Sorry I can't be of more help, man. I've usually got a great memory and I have absolutely no memory of you. Which has gotta suck to hear."

"Yeah, it does," Dominic confirmed.

There didn't seem to be much else to say, but after a moment he managed, "It'll pass, right? Has to."

"Most weird things on this island do," Jim agreed with a nod. "Sure this'll be included."
