There was an obscure reference about Tony retiring from being Iron Man in the conversation between Tony and Steve at the party, I thought. It wasn't obvious, but you could take it as them talking about Tony wanting to call it a day, but yeah, it was pretty vague.

Overall I liked it okay. Just okay. I had a number of major issues with it, with characters either getting short-changed and just being there for contractual obligations (Thor), altered beyond all recognition so Whedon could do his bait and switch (Hawkeye), had the asshole level turned to 11 (Tony and Cap), had their story reduced to being a love interest (Nat) or were just completely bland (the Twins) or being a cookie-cutter Whedon villain complete with pop culture wisecracking (Ultron).

With the character work being pretty weak, it fell back on the action sequences and, yep, like you I found them over long and pretty samey. The Avengers ending the movie smashing multiple enemies just felt like a retread of the first movie.

There were a few things I really liked. They nailed The Vision, so credit for that, but he wasn't in the movie nearly enough and like you I was completely baffled that Tony and Vis didn't even get a scene together. Bonkers.

All in all, I thought the problems that often plague both Whedon's work and summer blockbusters in general swamped this one and just left me feeling unsatisfied. It was okay. That's about it.

It sure as hell wasn't Iron Man 3.

You know, I watched it three times and I missed that line. Vague indeed.

I was putting Cap and Tony's assholishness on Wanda. If in doubt, blame the witch.

Thor was literally the least useful member, but like I said, he had two films and a personal connection to The Avengers' villain, so I was ok with him having nothing to do. I know for a fact that they cut some of his scenes, especially the pool vision. There are rumours about there being an extended cut of AoU, and as long as this doesn't mean "more smashing" I'd love to see it.

I had minimal exposure to the comic book Vision so I have no idea how close to the original he was.
