I can’t say I trust professional reviews and reviewers much these days. Iron Man 2 - one of the worst superhero films ever created, a pile of complete mess, ridiculous dialogue and missed opportunities - is fresh on RottenTomatoes while Cowboys and Aliens - the most innovative and interesting sf film I’ve seen in years - is rotten.
When the positive reviews for Avengers started to pour in I got excited but then I started to remember all those other “great” films that turned out to be simply “good”. Thor’s lack of character development was frustrating, Captain America felt small and the less is said about IM2, the better. So I went to see this film with a heavy heart, knowing than once again, I will be Miss Analyses Too Much.
WELL ISN’T THAT A PILE OF SELF-DEPRECATIONARY (SP?) BS! Every hype this film had - it lived up to it and then some. A masterclass, no, a class in its own. It’s shown that a superhero film doesn’t have to be dark and broody to be great, that you can have hilarious, witty banter, be self-aware, throw one-liners around, be camp, colourful and a bit clichéd and still be considered incredible. Yes, this film isn’t just funny, it’s hilarious and I’m talking laugh out loud hilarious.
Another thing I thought I’d have problem with is Bruce - you all know I love Norton’s version, that his Hulk is my favourite of the tie-in films, I really thought I will not accept Ruffalo but he really grabs you from the first moment you see him on screen and never lets go. I’d even argue that the way Bruce is played in this film, wouldn’t really fit Norton.
And of course, Maria Hill, the most hated character of the Marvel Universe. When I found out they are casting her, I was almost prepared not to go and see this film, that’s how massive is the level of my contempt towards this character. However, in the film… she does nothing. Ok, she’s there, she agents, she shoots, she fights, and that’s it. Crisis averted.
This is now my favourite superhero film out there, I can’t wait to see it again. Great stuff.
