I'm sure you already know this, but you should take off as much time as you need. Plenty of people don't take much time off. You've done this running thing for long enough that you're the best judge of what your body can handle. If you are in actual pain after the first race, don't do the second. If not, go for it.
If the progress notification thing is similar to what my past races have been, then there is often a website where anybody can go and sign up to have your checkpoints sent directly to them via email or IM. If you offer that link out, people who want to watch can sign up on their own. (If that's not an option, nevermind)
