You know on the simpsons when santa's little helper gets diagnosed with "twisted stomach"? That actually happens. It's a pretty crappy thing. This evening we had to euthanise a doggy for it. It was harder to handle than usual because the parents were both there during the care and crying and stuff so of course it is hard not to react to that. But when the adrenaline kicks in in a crisis situation it is a great help to be able to focus and do what needs to be done. Doggy went to a nice park location to fall asleep, and won't wake up in pain. That was a difficult end to a day.

Luckily we had one more procedure to do - collect urine from a cat. Usually this is done with a needle directly to the bladder through the abdomen, or by urinary catheter. This time the doctor thought "hey, let's just squeeze the bladder and catch it in a container. So my coworker Gaby was the catcher, I was the tail lifter and the doctor proceded to squeeze the bladder. Usually the pee just dribbles out, but the cat became a weapon and sprayed pee all over Gaby's face. But what a trooper, she continued to collect the sample, and waited to clean off her face.
Just goes to show you how hard core us vet nurses get to be :)
And on that same note,
I now have 2 cat bites on my arm. That can be a bit serious due to how gross cat's mouths are. I continued to hold on to the cat while it was biting me because we were in the middle of trying to give it an injection, so it got a couple of really good ones in. Dropping cats is way worse than having them bite you, but fighting that instinct is quite an art.
