fannish5 Five canon moments that turned a casual fandom into a hardcore fandom for you.
Alex Rider - When Alex Pettyfer showed up for the first time in the beginning of the Stormbreaker movie. At the moment I knew I'd be in the fandom for Teh Pretty. Haha. Just kidding. It's not actually just one moment that turned Alex Rider into a hardcore fandom for me; it's an entire book and that book is Scorpia. I think it's the best of all the Alex Rider books published so far (with Eagle Strike coming a close second) and it's mostly because of the information we learned about Alex's dad John Rider and his link to the criminal organization, Scorpia. I was actually on the verge of being a hardcore fan during the last remaining pages of Eagle Strike; Scorpia just sealed it for me.
Alex Rider:Alex/Sabina - I was a bit indifferent about Sabina when she first showed up in Skeleton Key. I was expecting her to be just the usual decorative potential love interest. It wasn't until Eagle Strike that I began to really like her and the sense of normality that she brings to Cub's/Alex's character. Weirdly enough, the moment that made me ship them hardcore is hardly romantic.
He went over to her. He wanted to put an arm round her but he ended up standing awkwardly in front of her instead. "Listen," he said. "This is going to sound really big-headed and you know I'd never normally tell you what to do. But the thing is, I have sort of been here before..."
"What? Locked up by a maniac who wants to destroy the world?"
"Well, yes. Actually I have." He sighed. "My uncle was trying to turn me into a spy when I was still in short trousers. I never even realized it. And it's true what I told you. They made me train with the SAS. Anyway, the truth is ... I know things. And it may be that we do get a chance to get back at Cray. But if that happens, you have to leave everything to me. You have to do what I say. Without arguing..."
"Forget it!" Sabina shook her head. "I'll do what you say. But it was my dad he tried to kill. And I can tell you, if Cray leaves a kitchen knife lying around, I'm going to shove it somewhere painful..."
"It may already be too late," Alex said gloomily. "Cray may just leave us here. He could have already left."
"I don't think so. I think he needs you; I don't know why. Maybe it's because you came closest to beating him."
"I'm glad you're here," Alex said.
Sabina looked at him. "I'm not."
Really, Cub. You are held hostage by a psychopathic pop star who plans to destroy the world, and you say you're glad because at least Sab's there with you? Sab's response <3
The Hunger Games:Peeta Mellark - The canon moment that made me a hardcore fan? I've liked Peeta from the first book. I like his humor and just how plain nice he is. But there is one scene in Catching Fire that made Peeta a character that I will like for years and years and years.
Peeta crouches down on the other side of her and strokes her hair. When he begins to speak in a soft voice, it seems almost nonsensical, but the words aren't for me. “With my paint box at home, I can make every color imaginable. Pink. As pale as a baby's skin. Or as deep as rhubarb. Green like spring grass.Blue that shimmers like ice on water.”
The morphling stares into Peeta's eyes, hanging on to his words. “One time, I spent three days mixing paint until I found the right shade for sunlight on white fur. You see, I kept thinking it was yellow, but it was much more than that. Layers of all sorts of color. One by one,” says Peeta.
The morphling's breathing is slowing into shallow catch-breaths. Her free hand dabbles in the blood on her chest, making the tiny swirling motions she so loved to paint with. “I haven't figured out a rainbow yet. They come so quickly and leave so soon. I never have enough time to capture them. Just a bit of blue here or purple there. And then they fade away again. Back into the air,” says Peeta.
The morphling seems mesmerized by Peeta's words. Entranced. She lifts up a trembling hand and paints what I think might be a flower on Peeta's cheek.
“Thank you,” he whispers. “That looks beautiful.”
For a moment, the morphling's face lights up in a grin and she makes a small squeaking sound. Then her blood-dappled hand falls back onto her chest, she gives one last huff of air, and the cannon fires.
The Hunger Games:Peeta/Katniss - The Peeta/Katniss moment that made me a fan?
“Your family needs you, Katniss,” Peeta says.
My family. My mother. My sister. And my pretend cousin Gale. But Peeta's intention is clear. That Gale really is my family, or will be one day, if I live. That I'll marry him. So Peeta's giving me his life and Gale at the same time. To let me
know I shouldn't ever have doubts about it.
Everything. That's what Peeta wants me to take from him.
I wait for him to mention the baby, to play to the cameras, but he doesn't. And that's how I know that none of this is part of the Games. That he is telling me the truth about what he feels.
“No one really needs me,” he says, and there's no self-pity in his voice. It's true his family doesn't need him. They will mourn him, as will a handful of friends. But they will get on. Even Haymitch, with the help of a lot of white liquor, will get on. I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.
“I do,” I say. “I need you.” He looks upset, takes a deep breath as if to begin a long argument, and that's no good, no good at all, because he'll start going on about Prim and my mother and everything and I'll just get confused. So before he can talk, I stop his lips with a kiss.
The Dark is Rising Sequence: Bran/Will/Jane - I didn't ship anything in The Dark is Rising Sequenc before. However, checking the fandom activated my shipping goggles so when I reread The Dark is Rising recently, I saw why fandom is into Bran/Jane/Will. Greenwitch gave me Will/Jane; The Grey King gave me Bran/Will and Silver on a Tree gave me Bran/Jane--whch turned into an OT3 I loved after this scene:
Bran eyed the flower in Will's pocket, "Oooh!" he said in a mocking falsetto. "A red rose, is it?"
Will said amiably, "Get lost."
"Not so pretty as Jane, that one who threw it."
"As who?" Will said.
"Jane Drew. Don't you think she's pretty, then?"
"I suppose so, yes," Will said, surprised. "I never thought about it."
Bran said, "One good thing about you, you're uncomplicated."
