PStwo-and-a-half

So, I'd been thinking I'd probably get a PS3 eventually. Aside from being a sucker for Final Fantasy, I'd at some point need a replacement for my venerable but aging launch-gen PS2. However, I was happy to wait until at *least* next year, because (a) there's not PS3 games I actually want yet, (b) they'll look better on an HDTV which I don't own ( Read more... )

Yeah, Phil and I have been saying that you could kinda use a new boob tube there. If you can blow whatever five hundred bucks or something on the PS3, you might wanna think about spending about the same on something that won't make it look like crap.

I got my 24" LCD on special for just a little more than that, and I've been quite happy with it. Makes everything look real pretty. Although now that I've got the Wii I'm short a component input.

I actually got the 60GB for $430 used (not bad, at $170 off the original price).

We'll certainly be getting a larger and HD TV at some point. Though like I said, the actual HD games I want won't start showing up until next year at the earliest, so I'm not feeling any particular rush.

I noticed while we were out shopping that for about $1500 I can get a gorgeous 24" screen with an iMac built into it. ;)

Meh. TV is a very low priority in our scheme of things. Much lower than computers and shit.

Eventually (once we get the bathroom remodeled) I have plans to redo the living room, and an entertainment center with new TV etc is in that plan. Expanded storage space is also a key feature of this plan. With a definite steampunk feel.

flow is fun, or at least the web version is. Although that version just stopped working at the end of the second time through the game without any warning or comment, which was kind of annoying.

When I heard that FF13 was confirmed as a PS3 exclusive, I wasn't nearly as sad about it as I thought I'd be. I think Final Fantasy X2 sent it down a pathetic path, Final Fantasy XI as an MMO wounded it in the dark, and Final Fantasy XII managed to drive a nail in the coffin via a nailgun that you can only get if you don't open four randomly placed chests.

I actually quite enjoyed X-2 just because I embraced the goofiness, but I realize it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. XI I haven't touched because MMOs are scary. XII, however, is totally totally great, and you're crazy. Yes, ok, except for the treasure chests. The randomness and the game's overall sense of "rarity" are stupid. But the rest of the game is pure distilled awesome.

Of course, FFXII has basically no bearing whatsoever on FFXIII, since they're made by completely different teams anyway.

But there are other things coming out (eventually) on PS3 that I'm looking forward to as well, like Little Big Planet. And then there's Tekken 6 for Conni's yearly dose of pretty boys. Oh, and Bumpy Trot 2.

Boxes aside, I didn't like the fact that the game was so bloated with nonlinear content that if you tried to actually do everything (a chronic problem of mine) you completely forgot what was going on in the story. This usually happens at the end of the game when you hit the "Damn, better do stuff before I go into the last dungeon", but they managed to spread it out ( ... )

Nonlinear content bloat is a common problem with RPGs these days. The problem is, if you *don't* include metric buttloads of it, all the review articles are like "Wah wah, you might be able to see everything in under 50 hours, the game's to short". This happens pretty reliably so I can hardly blame the developers for shoving stuff in. I actually dug the hunts and stuff, but yeah, this is not a good game to be uber-completionist about. And yes, the way the bazaar works is a tad stupid. It scared me off of giving it any rare items until end-game, when I then went crazy and built some ridiculous uber-weapons ( ... )
