Not that this is brand new or anything, but:
Woo! I can play Star Control 2 on my Mac!

Hooray for open-source releases of ancient software. Between this and the Marathon Trilogy release, I don't have to care that new games take a year or two to get ported to my platform. :P ( Read more... )

Awesome! I still have my Star Control II: Deluxe Map of Hyperspace. I should hang that up on the wall or something. ;)

Awesome! Star Control 2 was one of the greatest games of all time. Maybe the greatest. What writing! What music! What gameplay and exploration! *lapses into gibbering nostalgia*

Um, did you ever actually play Star Control 2 in the first place? Or did you just watch me play? :)

I watched you play, obviously, not having ever owned an x86 PC or a 3DO. But it's a good enough game that 2nd-hand nostalgia is still strong. ;)

So, remember any good gameplay tips? ^_^
I haven't actually stared a new game yet (and probably won't until a few months from now), but I tried some super-melee, and oy... either practice will make me better or I'm going to have to get really good at resource gathering so I can overwhelm enemies with numbers rather than skill. -_-;;

Well from later in the game, the best gameplay tip is to have a kickass flagship :) Load it up with the best weapons, three way shot, a couple levels of homing, a whole lot of rechargers, and maybe some crew modules (i forget if i used any of the last or not, i also can't remember if i bothered with defense or maneuverability add-ons at all.) Then make sure to have several ships with large crews that you can use to "repair" damage (hence why i'm not sure if i even bothered with crew modules.) Most things should die before they get anywhere near you.

As for earlier in the game, i think i have a vague recollection of using the spathi butt missile a lot while running away in circles. Of course that probably gets tedious after awhile :) Other than that all i can suggest is practice :) Now that i've been evily re-introduced to the crack i may install it myself and try it out, and if so i'll let you know anything else i remember.

Yeah, I remembered about getting that one Spathi ship early in the game, so I tried practicing with it a bit in super-melee mode. Even with my somewhat sucky skills, I can pretty well kill an Urquan Kzer-Za with one as long as I don't screw up too much. ;)

The dang Slylandro probes, however, went less well -- they're much too good at dodging the butt missiles, even with the computer skill set to low. Do you remember what you did about those things? (I imagine it may involve running away a lot until acquiring something that's better than Earth cruisers or Spathis at taking them out...)
