So, I rely somewhat heavily on the little USB (2 GB, nothing special) that I save my documents on. Several of my fictional works are only on that USB, because I thought them up while I was on the computer. There's also tons of notes and stuff. If my house was on fire, it would be one of the things I'd take with me.
But recently it's started to go crazy. I tried to open one story one day (a very lovely smutty present I was working on for DPAK) and it gave me over a hundred pages of symbols and not words. I freaked a little and checked the other documents. One more was messed up like that one. The third one was the text of the second one, claiming to be a completely different file name. I had printed copies of the actual third one and it was crap anyway, so I wasn't too worried about that. I was extremely upset about the apparently permanent loss of the first one, and still am.
Then a similar thing happened with some class assignments- luckily they were very re-writable, but I would have been screwed if they weren't. The text of those has not shown up as another document.
And today I go to look at the profiles for the characters of the series of short stories I'm working on. The profiles were neat, detailed, and took me a while to come up with all of the names. But what do I find when I open the document? That old crappy story that I wasn't worried about losing. The profiles appear to be gone. I have to redo them now, and I don't remember all of my clever names. I gave the characters middle names, for goodness sakes!
Oh, and I'm getting over a cold. FML.
ETA: I got my costume for Halloween. It's really comfortable and lovely, and has cheered me up a bit.
