When he first saw the white-haired man, Mukuro knew they’d met before. When he first looked into those violet eyes, an abrupt impulse to escape travelled through his entire body, and he knew whatever history they had had, hadn’t ended well.

The dreams started that very same day. Dreams wherein he, Mukuro, were talking and laughing with Byakuran; dreams wherein they were sleeping together, pleasuring each other to the fullest; dreams wherein they were fighting together; and the dream, that one, single dream that all the other dreams seemed to end in, wherein he was brutally and mercilessly killed by the very same person who’d gently loved him just the night before. The face was, for what in the dream felt like the first time, completely void of any feelings and those violet eyes stared into his own mismatched ones as he lay dying on the ground.

Very soon he was haunted by those eyes in his waking time as well, both imaginative ones caused by the dreams, and real ones. He hadn’t been able to relax ever since that first meeting, no matter how far away from he could get. Perhaps it was his eye trying to warn him from making the same mistake he’d done in an earlier life, warning him that his life might end in the same gruesome manner.

He thought many, many times of just giving up the charade, giving up his self-imposed mission, and get the hell away from the other man and the smell of death that seemed to hang all over the place. But in the end he kept going, kept smiling and playing his role like a good infiltrator. The dreams kept him on his toes, and those eyes kept following him wherever he went, and he kept falling for the other’s charm, though he knew, maybe not conscious, that he was falling into the same trap as before.

By the time the charade finally got to an end, he only felt joy throughout the whole thing, relieved that the eyes would finally stop hunting him. He would just have to remember to not get close to anyone with violet eyes and a captivating smile in his next life, he thought as he once again lay dying, staring into the other’s emotionless face. With his final breath he chuckled, and saw the man above him narrow his eyes, the eyes that haunted him.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
