I have a tendency to only post when I am so miserable or frustated or [insert negative emotion here] to the point when I just have to spout about it and here is a nice safe place to do so

I like Othello, it is a game I grew up with (this may mean I am biased). Once you know how to play it is a matter of not making mistakes but in the mean time much fun can be had prodding it until you know it. If you haven't played it before don't let anyone spolier you.
On the digitally enhanced game side almost everything I play... everything I play since not living at Templars', is on the PS2 which has a range of game based goodness and isn't pricey anymore. It also comes in small. If that is still too expensive then there are a whole bunch of board games in the world which range from games triskellian likes to games I like (the lack of shared ground in there is a running joke). They can get a bit pricey and not that many work well for two though. Of those that can there is San Juan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Juan_(game)) which is a card version of a very popular board game and we have recently acquired Race for the Galaxy (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/28143) but that is heading towards the complicated end of things.
A pack of cards and a book (website) full of games got myself and metame a reasonable way towards entertainment in Africa at times as well. And of course there is scrabble.
For doing things together we often end up doing different things together physically and interrupting each other every so often. This is all fine until he decides he's better at my Final Fantasy tactics than I am or I have killed him with over exposure to Agatha Christie :-)
Roo has just reminded me that we also do quite a bit of cooking things together - especially pies which are a valentines day tradition.
If all else fails we drink and argue about politics.
I hope the news is okay for AJ and that you survive work and all other health problems (yes, work is a health problem :-)
Ditto the San Juan, and I also like Lost Cities. But yes, there are heaps of good 2-player games with a pack of playing-cards. T and I have played a lot of a Nomination Whist variant, a game that works just as well with 2 as it does with lots.
