“La La Land” By: Demi Lovato
Adam knew that people looked up to him, saw him as a musical legend. How could he forget when they were constantly showering him with awe that they no doubt thought he deserved? That was fine and all, but what was with all the questions?
“Are you scared of being seen as a model for gay teens?”
“What was with that flamboyant performance last night? Do you have any idea the effect you have on people?”
Sometimes he just wanted to go back to good old days, before American Idol, before this insanity where his every move was questioned. But then he’d roll over in bed, and smile - because if it wasn’t for that one crazy decision, he wouldn’t have somehow managed to steal the heart of the most perfect man in the world.
Said man was currently looking at him through hazy eyes, asking with an adorable southern drawl, “Did you have a bad dream?”
Adam didn’t say “no”, merely remained silent, because he knew that if he did, Kris would give him one of the best hugs in the world and tell him things were okay.
“Baby, One More Time” By: Britney Spears
This song is for you.
A single text message, but it nearly made rock star Adam Lambert choke to death on the apple he’d been biting into.
“Give me a sign, hit me baby one more time!”
Adam’s jaw felt like it had dislocated when he saw which song Kris had linked to. His heart rate almost involuntarily sped up, as memories flashed through his mind. It couldn’t be though. Kris had rejected him already, made it perfectly clear that they weren’t going to be any more than just friends…
But live footage was sending a different message.
What the hell was he supposed to think?
“My loneliness is killing me…”
Maybe Kris meant something else entirely. Perhaps the man was just giving Adam a completely platonic poke, in an attempt to get Adam to stop the silent treatment he’d been giving Kris lately.
Still.
This was just unbelievable. Adam thought long and hard about what his next action should be. Well, first he’d obviously finish the video, then he’d send it to Allison (take that Kris, sweet revenge!). Last but not least, he might really give Kristopher that second chance he may or may not be asking for.
Just one more time.
“Bring Me To Life” By: Evanescence
“Kris! Kris, come back to me… Please!”
The world was spinning. Pretty lights just for him. What was that noise, though? Calling for him through the dark. Why? He was so close, so close to that blessed feeling of numbness, but that voice wouldn’t let him slip and somehow, he just knew that he didn’t want to disappoint the owner of that voice.
So he fought to keep his consciousness. His entire body hurt, aches and pains making him feel like one giant throbbing lump. A jackhammer was hitting the back of his head every few seconds.
Some sort of accident?
He forced his eyelids open, watching blue pupils widen inches from his own face. There were tear stains down the side of Adam’s face - that beautiful freckled face. Kris felt like his head was splitting in two.
“God, Kris, don’t you dare worry me like that.” Adam gulped, “I-I thought you were gone.” He tightened his grip on Kris’ hand and that’s when Kris first noticed their hands were connected. Had been even before he’d woken up. In that dark, almost dream-like state, he’d felt the hand holding on to him firmly, literally dragging him away from a horrible fate.
Bringing him to life.
That was great and all, but… “Who are you?”
The look on Adam’s face was heart-breaking.
“Dance Hall Drug” By: Boys Like Girls
Kris wondered what he had taken. Cocaine? Something else? What did it matter - all he knew was that it was a drug and it was fucking awesome. He felt like freaking Superman. Lights flashed, as he grinded against somebody or other, inhibitions thrown out the window.
He licked his lips, and felt somebody’s hands on his hips. Hell, yeah. Hands were feeling their way up his chest - another chest pressed against his back. Flat.
For a second, he paused and actually thought this was a bad idea. Next second, he was grabbing somebody’s hair and getting down and dirty. He smelled alcohol, but other than a little twitch of the nose, didn’t offer much reaction. The guy he was kissing had more muscles than he did. Instead of finding that disturbing, Kris was getting aroused. He’d always been a little bi-curious anyways. It just took one hell of a drug to get him to admit it.
“Wanna fuck?” The guy was tall, and looked older - a senior. Adam something-or-other. He was the type girls would scream and fall head over heels for, the type that was called “hot” instead of “cute” like Kris was often dubbed. He couldn’t believe this person was noticing him!
“Let’s doooo eeet.” He slurred. That was strange, Kris hadn’t realized he was that high. Couldn’t even form coherent words anymore.
He followed, head dizzy, as Adam lead him into the parking lot. Wouldn’t people see them? Ah, whatever. All he wanted was some action and soon.
“Get in the car.”
“Okie dokeeeyyy.” Kris would have taken his pants off outside the car right then if Adam had asked.
“Where do you live?”
“Huh?”
Adam’s voice was stern, “One, you’re underage. Two, trust me, if you do something in this state, you’ll regret it for a lifetime.”
“But I love you.” It sounded so real it scared Kris himself.
There was a silence in the car, “then tell me again when you aren’t high and maybe we’ll set up a date. Who knows? Now, address please."
“Womanizer” By: Britney Spears
Kris was such an enigma for Adam. It just didn’t make any sense that while every other single man (gay or otherwise) around fell for him, Kris remained cold and distant as always. He was almost certain he was making the right moves, but the reactions he usually got were nowhere to be seen.
One night, after work, he confronted Kris in the washroom.
“Why won’t you give me a chance?” His hands were on either side of Kris, sealing off the escape of his prey, forcing Kris to look him in the eyes.
The words that came out of Kris’ mouth were not at all what Adam expected.
“I know what you are, Adam.” His gaze was a dagger that stabbed Adam a billion times in the ribs and looked like it still wanted more action, “I’ve been with somebody just like you and trust me, one time was one time too many.”
“What in the world do you mean?” Adam used his innocent voice. Everybody fell for his innocent voice.
“You play with people’s hearts, never serious, not caring about anybody but yourself.” Kris normally spoke in a steady, matter-of-fact monotone. Adam had never seen the man get so worked up. “Fucking egotistical bastard.” He forcefully batted Adam’s hand away (holy cow, that little guy had more strength than Adam gave him credit for) and headed for the door.
“You hurt my feelings, Kris.”
“Fuck off.” Kris flipped him the bird, and with that he was gone.
It was at that exact moment that Adam had a ground-shaking epiphany. This time, his feelings were serious.
"Viva La Vida" By: Coldplay
“Prince Allen.”
“Stop calling me that, Cale. How many times do I have to tell you? I go by Kris now. Just Kris, not prince anything.” He was tired from having to explain this over and over. Maybe next time Cale called him by his old title again, he would just ignore his good friend.
“No matter what you say, prince Allen. You will always be the one and only rightful successor to the throne. You will always be royalty, whether you give up your responsibilities or not.”
Kris sat down for dinner, some plain bread and porridge. At least there was food today. Some days, when their music didn’t get them enough money, they had to hand in their food money to pay their rent.
Cale continued on with his nonsense, “You united two nations that were on the verge of war and you are the youngest to ever slay the Ruby Dragon.”
Those days were behind him now. Long gone. The days when Adam would laugh and sing together with him, both working towards a common goal - an ideal kingdom. What a joke. There was no such thing as an ideal. It had taken one arrow straight into the heart of his lover on the day a peace treaty was to be signed to make him realize that.
Even afterwards, having taken his revenge (about ten times what was due), all Kris felt was an emptiness. So he had left the throne and the kingdom for a simpler life.
The life Adam had led before he’d met a stupid, hot-headed prince on a Quest.
Those days were behind him now. Long gone.
Cale finally fell silent when he saw a single tear slip down Kris’ cheek.
“Smile” By: Uncle Kracker
Singing with Adam was like getting high. Only better. It gave him a certain buzz and made him feel so alive. It was as if Adam had so much energy up there on the stage that even those around him could feel it.
Kris loved singing with Adam.
His eyes shined whenever they looked into Adam’s, as their voices intertwined together. What a beautiful sound.
Every show was the same, yet different. Kris never got tired of that feeling.
What he loved even more though, was what they would do after the shows, when Adam needed to release all the sexual tension that had built up. Kris never stopped smiling
“Poker Face” By: Lady Gaga
Sometimes, Kris felt like Adam was as good at Poker as he was at the elusive thing called “love”. How else to explain how the older man was able to know exactly what to do at exactly the right time to make Kris feel like the luckiest and most special person in the world.
Spades.
Kris loved it when Adam would cuddle with him right after they made love. No need to exchange words. The silence of the moment was priceless in its own way.
Two pairs.
Adam never pushed, he let Kris take things at his own pace. He never complained when it took an entire three years for Kris to get a divorce with Katy, and he never showed that he minded when Kris didn’t feel emotionally ready for another relationship right after. Kris loved that.
Full house.
Sometimes Kris felt like he would never be able to beat Adam at this game. That Adam would always be the one giving more love in this relationship. Kris didn’t mind. But there were these moments, popping up now and then, when he just wanted so desperately to reciprocate in a grand manner - something that would make Adam absolutely delirious with joy.
So with his best poker face… He stood up in the middle of their poker game -
Dropped on one knee and pulled out a ring.
Royal Flush.
“White and Nerdy” By: Weird Al
Kris was shoved violently against a locker. It hurt like hell. Not for the first time, he wanted to punch the man who invented the term “child genius” - it had haunted him for far too long. No matter how many times his family relocated, he was still picked on.
All he wanted to do was be himself.
“Careful smart-ass, or you’ll get mommy’s sweater all dirty.” The condescending tone made Kris grind his teeth together. He knew better than to open his mouth though. What if he ended up stuffed in a locker again? It had been pure torture the last time.
“Hey, what are you freshmen doing over there?”
Kris wanted to see the face of his savior but instead just saw a jock from the football team - still clad in jersey and uniform. Not to stereotype or be cynical, but he really didn’t think this person was going to help much.
“You know, just teaching our friend here a lesson or two.”
Azure eyes scanned the situation. It was pretty obvious what was going on; but not everybody would admit to it. Kris squirmed.
“Well then, you can finish teaching the rest of this lesson in my presence. That friend of yours happens to be my tutor.”
“A-Adam?” Kris finally managed to stutter out.
Suddenly the bullies seemed to disappear into thin air. They were that quick to escape. Nobody risked messing with a senior, let alone one on the football team.
Adam took off his headgear and winked, “You going to thank me for saving your ass just now?” Beads of sweat trickled down the sides of his face, his hair pressed flat down. Sexy.
Kris looked left and right and saw an empty hallway. Then he leaned in for a chaste kiss on the lips, which soon turned into something a lot steamier.
“The Fear” By: Lily Allen
Adam was scared. His successful career was coming at the expense of his social life. He was becoming somebody he didn’t even recognize. Last time Danielle had called him up to plan a “girl’s night” he’d told her to ask his manager. Then she’d hung up on him.
On the cover of so many magazines, with so many fans and yet Adam Lambert felt so disconnected with the real world. Was all this really worth it? Was this what he really wanted?
What if he became alienated from his family and friends? What if Kris didn’t love him anymore because they didn’t spend nearly enough time together. Every time they had to “make time” to meet up, it was always Kris that gave in, changing his plans. At the rate things were going, Adam wasn’t that sure about their relationship. And if there was one thing he knew for sure, it was that he did not want this relationship to be over.
They had battled impossible odds to get to where they were. And they were not going to let this twisted world of the media tear them apart.
With shaking fingers, he dialed Danielle’s number.
