Kimi was over an hour late. As much as she complained about never getting to see Aiji, she always wanted to make it on her own terms, set her own times. He sat on the couch as he waited, each second that passed making him feel more annoyed and lonely. Finally, a light knock at the door heralded her arrival.

“Kimi!” he said as cheerfully as he could manage, sweeping her forward after he opened the door and planting a light kiss on her lips.

“Come on now, I just got here, back off for a moment.” Her tone was a bit snappy. It had been like that a lot lately.

Aiji took her hand and led her into the living room, trying to focus on the positive things about spending time with her, to keep himself from saying anything he might regret later.

--------------

A short trip to the corner store later and Aiji was satisfied with the amount of alcohol they had as they sprawled out in the living room again, Aiji on the couch and Maya sitting on the floor at the foot of the doll’s chair.

“Let the healing begin,” Maya said, raising one can like a toast. “Go ahead, tell me all the bad stuff about her. Let it out.”

At this point, Aiji had only had about three cans of beer, and although he appreciated Maya’s effort, he wasn’t yet in the state where insulting Kimi would make himself feel better. That was okay, though, since Maya was ready to do it for him.

“Did she say a lot of mushy stuff? No, probably not, she always seemed kinda stuck-up. Never said a kind thing to me.” When Maya stopped to take a drink, Aiji decided to interrupt.

“She never said anything kind to you since you never said anything kind to her,” he reasoned. “I mean, you insulted her right after I introduced you.”

For a moment, Maya looked thoughtful, but the moment passed, and he grinned at Aiji. “Hey, who was that one girl you used to date? The one with the pet snakes?”

Aiji stared at him with a less than amused look, answering, “Akiko.”

“I liked her. Why did you break up with her?”

“Because it turned out she was on drugs, Maya.”

“Yeah, but she was fun!”

The response made Aiji just shake his head, laughing a little. When Maya spoke again, it was with more seriousness, and what he said was not something worth laughing at.

“You have pretty bad luck with women, don’t you? You’re always getting dumped.”

--------------

Her lips had the slightly sweet taste of gloss that lingered on his even after only the brief contact. He wanted more than that, much more. Still holding her hand, he pulled her gently towards the couch and sat down, but she stopped before joining him, her eyes wide as she stared at something. Aiji followed her gaze to the doll, sitting as always in it’s chair. But Kimi hadn’t been there since the doll’s arrival.

“What is that?” she asked. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t thought to hide the doll somewhere before she got there, but he had actually gotten used to it’s presence, to the strange sort of company it provided. Kimi, however, didn’t sound like she would accept that in explanation.

“It’s nothing, just a gift from someone.” Standing up again, he tried to pull her in for another kiss, but was pushed back. Of course he couldn’t distract her so easily.

Keeping a cautious distance, Kimi peered at the doll, which stared back, unblinking. “Ew, Aiji, is this a sex doll? Why is it wearing Maya’s clothes?” She reached out to tug at the sleeve of the doll’s shirt before pulling back suddenly, nearly running into him in her haste to get away from the doll. “You haven’t used it, have you?”

“No,” he answered honestly.

“Oh thank god. It’s bad enough to think of all the time you spend with him, in the studio and on tour, but if you were sleeping with a freaky sex thing that looks like him, I would-”

“No.” When he repeated the word, she stopped talking and looked confused. He spoke again before she could question him. “Stop complaining about Maya. I get it, he really bugs you, and you don’t like him. But I do. I like him a lot.”

Her eyes narrowed. She laughed, an obviously uncomfortable one that showed she was getting nervous. “Sounds like you are fucking the doll.”

In any other tone, it would have sounded like a joke, but Aiji could tell she meant what she said, that she didn’t believe him and wouldn’t be convinced that he and Maya were nothing more than friends.

“We’re through, Kimi.”

--------------

“Bad luck?” Aiji let out a bitter laugh. “It was all your fault this time, you and that doll. You owe me big.”

“What are you suggesting?”

Looking between Maya and the doll again, Aiji stifled a sigh by drinking more beer, and his answer sounded more cheerful already. “Mario Kart, for money of course.”

A grin spread across Maya’s face as he hurried to set up the game and the controllers, and as he watched him, Aiji felt truly happy for the first time that night.
