Smoke and Fire
Homo rumours are nothing new nor unmanageable, but Kouichi finds it rather disturbing when it's his nearest friends who gossip.
"All I did was enter his room by mistake," he says. "You know the corridors were a little confusing, and the rooms looked the same..."
Takamizawa isn't in fact an active member of the grapevine, and is the recipient of this explanation only because he happens to be sitting beside Kouichi when Shinji drops a teasing remark on the way to the dressing room. He tries to find a neutral response. "Shouldn't they have seen you coming out straightaway, if that was the case?"
"He was figuring out how to operate the humidifier back then," Kouichi says. "I figured I'd need to know that too, so I stayed to investigate the thing with him."
Takamizawa considers this. "I can imagine that happening alright."
"Right?" says Kouichi, happy. Then, "Does this sort of thing happen often with Sakurai-san?" He laughs when Takamizawa punches his biceps.
"Unlike you," Takamizawa huffs, "I never get mixed up about where my room is. Not as long as I'm leaving my guitar there."
"I was mistaken only that once," Kouichi argues. He pauses to think. "In fact, I really was. A mistake wouldn't get that far anyway. Tsuyoshi normally locks his door."
"But this time he didn't," Takamizawa says.
"This time he didn't," Kouichi says.
And because they, finding nothing amiss about this, haven't thought to keep their voices down, an addendum to the current gossip soon spreads.
--
"But it wasn't a hotel," Tsuyoshi says calmly. "We were houseguests. I didn't think it polite to lock my door."
"I did." Nishikawa shrugs. "Such considerations are no big deal to the people there. Besides, it was a vacation home. The owner wasn't staying with us."
"Oh, is that so?"
"Yeah." Nishikawa pokes his friend's shoulder. "But of course, lucky for Kouichi that you're so thoughtful, directionally challenged as he is, that there happened to be a welcoming, unlocked room for him to stumble into."
"Is that so?" Tsuyoshi repeats, still unperturbed.
"You're no fun." Nishikawa pouts. "We all know it's nothing, but Kouichi would at least oblige us by blushing and all that."
Tsuyoshi chuckles. "Even he wouldn't be so gullible. We've handled this sort of thing all through fifteen years."
"Overconfident, are we?" Nishikawa leans back with a grunt. "I say, you've got away with the totally-not-suspicious actions too many times, you're getting too comfortable. Both of you."
When Tsuyoshi merely snorts softly in response, Nishikawa sits up again, peers at him, and laughs. "Wait, are you blushing now?"
"Shut up," Tsuyoshi says. "I'm obliging you."
--
"You all right?" Kouichi asks. Nishikawa has just made another passing remark about the temperature of Tsuyoshi's skin.
"I'm perfectly fine," Tsuyoshi says. "Ignore him."
"Ah." Kouichi chuckles, comprehending. "What's the joke?"
Tsuyoshi grimaces. "Primary-school level joke. He's way too excited about the homo rumours."
Kouichi scratches his reddening ear briefly. "I thought he'd known you a long time. That shouldn't be a novelty anymore."
Tsuyoshi shrugs. "He hasn't witnessed it himself until recently."
"Then he might explode if he sees our... more outrageous stuff, back in the days."
"Ah," says Tsuyoshi. "If he doesn't stop with the sly comments in the near future, please be prepared for me to grab and molest you."
"Eh?" Kouichi laughs. "You never found it necessary to give me advance notice before."
Tsuyoshi snickers. It softens into a smile by the time he replies, "Well, I'm afraid I'm getting too comfortable otherwise."
--
"Are they doing it on purpose?" Nishikawa mutters.
"What?" asks Makki, crouching a bit nearer.
"Leaving the door open."
"Isn't it usually?" Takamina says. "Besides, Nishikawa-san, you had all sorts of suspicions when it wasn't open."
"It's also suspicious when they're giving us all this show," Nishikawa insists.
"But they're doing... nothing," says Makki.
Nishikawa considers this. "Well," he concedes.
"Hmmm," says Takamina.
"What? Anything happening?" Nishikawa crowds back to the front line.
"Nah," Takamina sighs dreamily. "Just thinking, a two-member group is pretty nice."
