I traveled half the world to say, you are my Muse

Chuck was a lovely husband and picked up the new Muse album, The Resistance, at Target yesterday. I was really afraid I wouldn't like this album much given the clips available on iTunes, but in listening to the entirety of each song is proving my fears unwarranted. I'm digging it!

It's still a fairly odd album for me to listen to, even knowing they're progressive, because I get flavors of other bands in there - snippets of Queen on United States of Eurasia, and air of Depeche Mode on the chorus of Undisclosed Desires, even a little bit of Maroon 5 on I Belong to You. There's also something very Dr. Who about the intro in the opening track, Uprising. I have to disclaim, however, that I'm no big music buff, and don't avidly listen to any of the bands that I've just compared tracks to, so the comparison is based on those bands widely-broadcast radio hits rather than an intimate knowledge of their musical style. I digress, though - these similarities don't particularly bother me, but they are odd to note for me since I've never had these similarities pop to my ear on any of Muse's previous works.

So far my favorites are the first three tracks, Uprising, Resistance, and Undisclosed Desires, but MK Ultra has a great energy too, and the Exogenesis three-part symphony is an interesting sequence, getting quite soundtracky in a good way.

I'm rather pleased to have a new album from a band I love to listen to over and over for a while!
