Chapter 6.

It was Kazuya’s birthday.

February 23rd came quickly, like a breeze. Jin had been out of the estate after the short bonding moment with Kazuya. Like the usual, he partied and stayed with his girls. Sometimes, he’d go to the host club to fill for someone. It was one thing Jin enjoyed; being in the arms of a woman makes him happy.

What a shallow man.

Oftentimes, Jin thought of coming home. He did but it was on the wee hours and everyone’s asleep. He would sleep throughout the day and be gone again by night. Kazuya often called him and dropping short messages in his voice mail. He would also call him back, checking on how the boy was doing and bid goodbye. He was unsure now, he didn’t want to be attached to the boy but he was doing something which is exactly opposite to what he wanted. Giving Kazuya permission to call him anytime made Jin think he made a bad decision. With his emotions and thoughts slightly shaken, he began avoiding Kazuya but he doesn’t know why.

The reason remains a mystery to him.

Everyone in the house was preparing a small feast: today is Kazuya’ birthday. Mariko and the other maids prepared dishes which were the young master’s favorite. Making him the meals he loved most is the only way they can show their appreciation of the young boy.

Looking around the kitchen, Mariko noticed the easy chatter going between the younger maids. She gazed at Haruka, trying to get her attention, and when she did, signaled that she would go out for awhile, leaving the kitchen in Haruka’s hands. The younger maid nodded in assent.

Once Mariko is out of the kitchen, she stormed her way into one of the gardens in the estate. She sat on a tree stump and whipped out a cigarette. Taking a long drag of the nicotine, she thought of her future which is slowly crumbling since the appearance of one person: Koji.

Mariko still can’t believe Koji is alive. After all, she was the one who driven the eldest Kamenashi out of the estate. She was sure she did something terrible to the young boy, something that would scar him forever but something had gone awry with her plans.

Snorting in distaste, Mariko threw the cigarette and stepped on it. Tonight, she is going to do something to ensure the wealth for her self.

Kazuya was sitting inside his room his hands playing with the mobile phone Jin had bought for him. He was thinking of giving his brother another phone call and tell him to come home early for his birthday feast but he isn’t sure since he was also thinking that Jin is doing something important at the moment.

Torn and unable to weigh which should he do, Kazuya decided to give up calling Jin and resorted to playing with the stuff on his bed. Never mind if they were plushies and other stuffed toys, they give him a sense comfort and happiness.

Kazuya is still a child after all.

Jin was browsing in the shopping complex looking around for a perfect gift. He had overheard the young maids talking yesterday when he arrived home early in the morning about Kazuya’s birthday. He was surprised though, the boy did not say anything about his birthday since the younger one didn’t ask for any present and didn’t ask him to come home early and celebrate with him. At first, Jin just shrugged Kazuya’s birthday but it kept playing in his mind that he was coerced to give in. And it was this that he found himself in the shopping mall again.

He thought of buying the boy something special but he did not know what it was. Clothes? They’ve already bought it. A mobile phone? The boy already got one.  A pet? They have dogs and cats running all over the estate. A car? That would be for Jin’s advantage. What does that special could be?

Lost in his thoughts, Jin’s feet brought him to the Cartier shop they visited on their last trip. Jewelry is expensive but at least it would mean something. Jin thought hard of what to buy as a gift.  Necklace, bracelet or ring would do the trick, but the question is which?

“Hello sir, do you want something? I could help you.” Jin looked up to the woman who greeted him and recognized it as the woman who was chatting with Kazuya the last time.

“Ah, if it isn’t the nice big brother. Are you buying for your girlfriend or is it for your little brother?” Eri teased, ignoring the look Jin was giving him. “Well?”

Jin sighed and looked up at the Cartier sign behind the woman. “It’s my brother’s birthday; can you help me find a suitable gift? I want it to be something special.”

Eri smiled at Jin and nodded. “I can certainly help you with that. Follow me.” Jin nodded and followed the woman who led him to another display case.

It was a bit joyous inside the estate. There was laughter and jolly music playing in the background. When Jin entered the house, Haruka greeted him and led him into the dining area where everyone was.

Nao was there and took the opportunity to chat with him, telling him what happened after he left the house. They looked deep in the conversation and Mariko grabbed her chance to take Kazuya out in the terrace.

“Kazuya, omedetou. Here is my gift to you.” Mariko said taking out a small box.

“Arigatou.” Kazuya said. He held the small box in his hands carefully.

Mariko gave Kazuya a pointed look. It could be now or never. The terrace was raised a good two or three foot from the ground. He could just push the young boy, leave and pretend that nothing happened. Then the boy would land in the hospital and then she could have her way when she’ll look after him. But just as she was about to wrap his arm around the boy’s shoulders, Jin emerged from the open French doors and called Kazuya’s name.

“Kazu.”

The young boy turned around, a smile was on his lips. “Nii-chan.”

Jin walked over to Kazuya and nodded at Mariko to leave them alone. Mariko quickly left the two alone, an unreadable expression on her face.

“Happy birthday.” Jin greeted.

“Thank you Nii-chan.” Kazuya replied, hugging Jin in the process.

Jin wrapped one arm around Kazuya and ruffled the younger man’s hair.

Later in the night, the two were alone in Kazuya’s room. Jin was helping him unwrap the presents the servants gave him. Kazuya squealed every time his hands touch the unfamiliar things in his hands. Jin would described the gifts and tell them what they are.

“Kazu, here is my gift to you.” Jin placed a small box in Kazuya hand.

Kazuya unwrapped the small box and carefully opened it. “Ne, Nii-chan, what is this?”

Jin laughed at Kazuya’s question. He took the box from the other’s hand and took the object in it. He then took Kazuya’s left hand and slid the ring in the pinky.

“You remember the jewelry shop we came to last time? Eri-san helped picked the ring out.” Jin said, he took Kazuya’s hand and let it touch his other hand where a matching pinky ring was. “Can you feel this ring? It’s the same one with yours. Mine has your name engraved in it while yours had mine.”

Kazuya looked up at Jin, his dull eyes shining. “Arigatou, Nii-chan.”

Jin looked at thei matching pinky rings. It was true that he had the names engraved in the rings but it wasn't Koji's name that was engrave in the Cartier's 18K yellow gold diamond pinky ring. Jin was the name engraved in it. For once, he felt the need to be honest on Kazuya's birthday even though the younger one still had no idea who he really was. But he was sure Kazuya would overlook the engraved name.

Jin smiled and kissed Kazuya’s head, an action that surprised both of them. “Since I’ve finally gave you my present, it’s now time to get to sleep.”

Jin fixed Kazuya’s bed removing the gifts that lay on it and helped him lay down.

“Nii-chan…” Kazuya called as Jin was making his way out of the room. “Thank you.”

Jin nodded. “Anything for you Kazu.” He said and quickly exited the room.
