I went to Festifall today, and I plan on going back later again, but I just took another step towards a big decision.
I think I want to join Air Force ROTC for next year.
The thought's been in my mind for the past half year or so. Some things have turned me off to it, like the fact that I'll be undeniably in the country's service for at least seven years, although that's not really bad at all, considering I kinda like America.
Anyway, a few things really got my mind going about this.
First, I'd get to either design, build, or fly planes. The last option appeals to me in particular. I know that Air Force works with NASA too, which rocks. As my Engineering instructor explained, there are two kinds of Aerospace Enginnering: within the stratosphere and beyond it. Air Force works with both. Not only that, going back on what I said, but I'm in the perfect discipline of engineering for Air Force.
Second, I consider myself pretty in shape, for a college freshman not involved in anything right now. If I can start exercising more often, I can surely get past the physical test with no problem. Furthermore, being in an ROTC program will keep (or force) me to stay in shape. I like being in shape, I just find it hard to motivate myself to go work out or exercise when I can just as easily sit here and lose in StarCraft every night.
Third, the officer at the booth did some mad convincing on me, explaining the ways scholarships work and commitments to the Air Force after school, depending on position in the program (pilots have to stay for about twelve years, I think). She also said I can come by North Hall after setting up an appointment to ask any questions I might have before making a decision. I will definitely take that offer. I've never been more interested in this in my life.
Finally, today is Thursday. The ROTC members in school are to wear their respective uniforms during the day (Ellen, correct anything I say wrong about this, I'm working from a limited knowledge). Seeing students dressed in the uniform made me respect the armed forces more than ever, seeing such patriotism in so young of people. If people at the age of eighteen are already willing to serve the country without question, why am I sitting on my ass all day doing nothing? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the armed forces is the only way to go, but seeing these people all day has made me respect the prospect even more.
Wow that was long. But everything I say is true, and I really want to follow up on this. I hope this can all work out.
I'm excited :)
