This, in a nutshell, is why we can never settle for second-rate marriage substitutes for same-sex couples:

UPS has denied benefits to those NJ couples joined by a civil union, because New Jersey law does not treat civil unions the same as marriages. "It just goes to show when something is separate, it's never equal."

(Though honestly, if I were to pick one quote from that article to sum up the whole thing, I rather like this line: "In the real world, civil unions are to marriage what artificial sweetener is to sugar. It's not the same thing and it leaves a bad aftertaste.")
