Gr. Personally, I was gratified by the gritty realism (surrealism?) in Doom III -- I didn't play it for the plot or for the Shooting Big Monsters With Teeth, I played it for the atmosphere, which was created by the combination of graphics, sound, and periodic audio logs found throughout the base. Besides, the graphics were so damn pretty.... tilting light sources and wrinkled, leathery skin and glowing fireballs casting inky shadows all around. Besides, considering how base a form of entertainment are first person shooters, we at least ought to make them look good.

However, I'll put my commentary on 5 things people like but I don't get:

1. Sex scenes in movies. What's the point of a juicy sex scene if you're not gonna use it to whack off? Which, I might add, is not acceptable to do in public, so I would think that sex scenes in movies designed for public consumption (no pun intended :P) would be a bit of a contradiction.

2. Sex Appeal In Advertising (except for those funny Axe commercials, which mock the genre): why does it work? Are people so STUPID that they think that, by using such-and-such a product, you'll suddenly get The Hot Chick? Especially when you get really pissed off at the mere mention of sex-for-anything-other-than-reproduction, and at the mere suggestion that the advertisement you're watching is based around sex appeal? Grow up!

3. Anime with Angsty Silent Quasi-Heroes and/or General Angst: Yes, yes, you're tortured about an event in your past and you've closed your heart and will never love again. We also get that you're unsure about your love for such and such character, even though you're thinking about him/her relentlessly. It's been done too many times. Move on.

4. Movies that appeal to the lowest common denominator like the first two HP movies (and a good deal of the third) and Star Wars Episodes 1 and 2: I'm sorry, but I'm sure if you made movies designed to appeal to smart people, the dumb people would be impressed and go see them again.

5. Plots about Magical Energy: Okay, we get it, you've found some way to tap into Unlimited Power through some sort of crystal. Move on. Give us a situation in which people have limited access to ultimate power, and then describe how people react around those limited access points.
