Alternative prompt 3: Cuddling on the Couch

Satoshi was just so tired. He wanted to curl up in a ball and weep and ignore everybody and everything.

“Are you sure you are okay with me being away over the weekend?” his father asked and Satoshi nodded.

“Yes, don’t worry about us. I’ll take care of everything. You take care of mum,” Satoshi said. There was a hollow feeling inside of him as he said that. Their mother wasn’t in the hospital anymore, there was nothing the doctors could do to help her anymore so she moved to a hospice. Something that they had not been able to tell the three younger boys yet. The hospice was further away than the hospital so if his father wanted to visit he had to stay the night.

Satoshi understood. He didn’t want his mother to be alone, at the same time the idea of visiting instead of his father was scary for him. He wouldn’t be able to stand it.

But now he wanted to take it back. The twins had been cranky all day. Masaki had been a bit down because they hadn’t been able to go out because of the cranky twins and he had wanted to go to the petting zoo today.

When Satoshi had explained they couldn’t as he didn’t want to provoke any of them falling ill, he had whined and stomped his feet as he ran to his room and closed the door with a bang.

It was cute, especially when soon after Masaki had come back down crying and apologising for behaving like that.

Satoshi had tried to do laundry and clean the apartment when Sho in an attempt to cheer up Masaki had caused a cocoa powder explosion in the kitchen. Their prepared dinner had been ruined by it as well.

He rocked Kazu on his arm, who was clinging to him most of the day as he tried to think about what to do instead of shouting, yelling and crying, even if all three of those things sounded like the best option right now.

He was so close to giving up when a freshly showered Sho and Masaki appeared beside him. At least one thing Satoshi had not to deal with he thought as he looked at the clean boy beside him. Sho whispered to Masaki and soon the boy grabbed his arm to drag him over to the sofa.

“I need to make dinner,” Satoshi said when he almost fell to the sofa. God, sitting would be nice, he thought when Kazu pinched the skin of his cheek in a try to grab onto anything of his big brother in his flailing.

“You need a rest,” Sho disagreed, carrying over Jun who was crying from the crib he was put into earlier.

“You can’t cook,” Satoshi said.

“I didn’t plan to. It’s my fault that dinner is ruined though. I say it’s time for a pizza and movie night. The twins can have some of their pre-made mush and I will order fries or something for them to nibble on. Masaki, you need to choose some sweets and then we can watch the newest Ghibli movie.”

“I…” Satoshi said, not really sure what to say when Masaki was already cheering and jumping to his feet. When Sho put Jun down beside Satoshi and Kazu wriggled until he could rest between Satoshi and Jun which finally made both of the twins shut up he sighed. “Okay… Just tonight,” he agreed to open his arms for Masaki when he came back with bags of chips and chocolates for later and cuddled with the boys while Sho ordered their food and sat down on the other side of the twins as he started the movie. Maybe letting Sho decide now and then was not the worst move, he thought as he felt the headache that had built up most of the afternoon slowly go away.
