Treat after something bad has to be done (doctor’s visit or something)
Satoshi frowned as he watched the twins eating their dinner, Kazu was sniffling slightly and almost falling asleep as he ate his stew. His nose was slightly red as were his eyes from where he had been rubbing them throughout the meal and he sighed softly. Kazu had been low on energy already most of the afternoon and their daycare teacher had mentioned that he was a bit lethargic today, but Satoshi had thought it was mostly down to Kazu having slept not that well. Now he could tell that the chances were high that Kazu would wake up with a full cold the next morning and mentally already made a list about what he had to change for tomorrow.
Jun was still babbling about the big sandcastle he had built with a friend in class while Kazu had stayed inside with the teacher to make a picture, not wanting to go outside. Satoshi hummed and smiled as he saw the proud look on the youngest face and waited for them to finish their meal. Kazu was already nodding off fully though and he grabbed the boy when he let the spoon fall before he could follow the spoon in the soup.
“Ready for bed, Kazu?” he asked in a low voice and Kazu whined but snuggled up against his big brother.
“Kazu owie?”
“Kazu is a bit tired, Jun. I think he got a small cold.”
Jun grimaced unhappily at the words. He didn’t like colds. They were annoying and he didn’t like coughing and sniffling and sweating. And that meant he couldn’t play as he liked.
“Cold fight!” he declared and puffed out his chest. Satoshi chuckled and ruffled his hair.
“Rest will be better than a fight, Jun,” he explained and motioned to his bowl. “Finish your food, okay? Then I will put you both to bed.”
Jun furrowed his brows as he wanted to argue, but then his eyes fell on his brother who was already half asleep against his big brother. He finished his stew and then pushed the bowl away before hopping off the chair. “Finish, Nii-chan!”
Satoshi smiled and rearranged Kazu on his arms so that he was able to carry him more comfortably. Kazu was whiny when he forced the boy to brush his teeth and change into his pyjamas. Jun was way more pliant today as he wanted to make it easier on Satoshi.
Sho and Masaki were in Masaki’s room, checking Masaki’s homework over and then Sho had promised to play a game with Masaki while Satoshi took care of the two youngest.
“I sleep Kazu?”
“No, you sleep in your bed tonight, Jun,” Satoshi said, ignoring the pout on Jun’s face, as he helped Kazu into the lower of the bunk beds and put the blanket over his body.
“Why? I strong!”
Satoshi sighed and picked Jun up to hug him. “Because your brother is ill, Jun, and I don’t want you to catch it, if you are going to throw a tantrum you can go sleep in Sho’s room and Kazu sleeps in my room. You can’t share a bed with Kazu tonight and have to sleep in your bed,” he explained patiently but also looked at him strictly.
Jun pouted and crossed his arms on his chest as he stared Satoshi down. Satoshi lifted an eyebrow and then he sighed.
“I sleep my bed,” he grumbled.
Satoshi chuckled since it was normal that the twins would sleep in their beds only sometimes when there were bad dreams or one was upset would they climb into the bed of the other during the night. “Also I will check up during the night, and I will not be a happy brother if I see you sneak into Kazu’s bed,” he reminded him.
Jun’s face fell but then he nodded. “Will not, Nii-chan.”
“Good boy. Do you want to have a story read by me or should I put a CD?” Satoshi asked as he helped Jun to climb into the bed on top and also put the blanket around the boy tightly. Jun shoved one of his favourite teddies into Satoshi’s face while hugging his second tightly.
“Give Kazu.”
“Okay,” Satoshi said with a smile as he took the toy and put it under the blanket with Kazu who murmured something as he turned around and held the toy tightly this time.
“CD,” Jun said then and Satoshi nodded as he wished him a good night and put a CD with good night songs on for the twins to listen to. He sighed as he left, The way Kazu didn’t react to a lot it was very clear that it was not a bug that a night’s sleep would make go away.
-
Satoshi was silent as he stepped into the room of the twins, Kazu was breathing hard and he put his hand against his forehead to check. It was warm and Kazu tried to get away from his touch as it seemed to hurt. Satoshi made a soothing noise, before putting the blanket again around him and then stood to wake a sleepy Jun and let him jump into his arms.
“How are you feeling Jun?”
“Sleep,” Jun murmured, snuggling against him and Satoshi patted his hair. The boy was always bad with mornings and since he didn’t seem to run a fever or have any other symptoms Satoshi decided it to be safe to pick out some clothes for him and carry him out.
“Kazu…”
“Kazu stays here today, Jun.”
“I too.”
“No, you go to the daycare and have fun. Kazu will sleep most of the day so it’ll be boring.”
“But…”
Satoshi shook his head and rubbed his cheeks. “I will pick you up with Masaki later, as always and you don’t need to be sad.”
Jun sniffled but then nodded. “I paint.”
“You are going to make a picture for Kazu?” Satoshi asked as he helped him get ready for the day. Jun nodded with big eyes. “I’m sure he’ll like that.”
“Puppy.”
“A puppy sounds good. Kazu likes dogs the most.”
Jun grinned happily at the words and Satoshi tickled him a bit. “And if you go to the daycare today with Sho and Masaki without complaints you can choose the afternoon snack.”
Jun’s eyes widened and he nodded happily as he skipped out of the door, declaring that he will think, as he ran down and Satoshi grinned when he heard him loudly say good morning to their father who told him that breakfast was already ready. He stretched and checked on Kazu again, but the boy was still asleep so he decided to have breakfast as well first and then make an appointment with their family doctor for the early morning while the others were out.
-
Satoshi almost winced when he finally got Kazu to wake up and the boy was coughing wildly. He rubbed his shoulders comfortably and coerced him to eat some porridge their father had prepared before almost running late for work.
“Hurts,” Kazu croaked and Satoshi smiled.
“I can imagine. Does your throat hurt, little one?”
“Uh-hu,” Kazu said and he caressed his cheek to catch the tear slipping down.
“Can you still manage a few more bites? Papa made it especially for you,” he explained and held out the spoon. Kazu managed two more spoonfuls before he pressed his lips to close tightly. Satoshi frowned but didn’t force Kazu to eat more and put the bowl away before opening his arms for the boy to get to him.
“Let’s get you washed and then we have to go to the doctor.”
Kazu shook his head and buried his face against his brother's shirt. “No like!” he whined and cleared his throat a few times, before coughing and looking miserable as he held his throat.
“No can’t do. We need to go there. The doctor will just check up on you, Kazu.”
Kazu cried as he shook his head and Satoshi rocked him in his arms from side to side as he dried the tears. “No wanna shots!” he cried and grimaced as his throat hurt so much now.
“Oh Kazu,” Satoshi cooed and rubbed his back to get him to calm down again. “You are not going to get any shot today. We are not going to get vaccinated, but she will listen to your chest, and look into your mouth.”
“Promise?” Kazu asked and Satoshi nodded. He didn’t think that it was so bad that they needed to give him medicine that way. “Okay…”
“After we can get the cough drops you like,” Satoshi promised. “Because you were all brave.”
Kazu smiled happily as he nodded. He liked those, and Satoshi chuckled as they were getting them anyway with the way Kazu seemed to suffer from a sore throat. If Kazu took it as a treat after the scary doctor’s visit it was just a plus. And honestly? Satoshi didn’t mind treating any of his brothers after such things they didn’t like.
He made sure Kazu was well bundled up for the cold day, especially since he got cold more easily when he was ill and off they went to the doctor. Satoshi was glad to know that it was just a minor case of the flu and after rest and some medicine Kazu should be okay in a few days, even if the worry was still there that Jun would catch it, but that had to be dealt with then, he thought, as he carried a slightly sleepy Kazu to the supermarket to pick up the right ingredients to make Jun’s favourite almond snack, as he was sure that he would ask for that. Back at home he put Kazu on the sofa, bundled up in blankets and with his favourite tea to make sure he drank enough throughout the day.
Satoshi concentrated on his work while he also checked on the soup he was preparing for lunch and waited for the rest to get home.
