Nagase's family stories (Part 39)

Kazu woke up very early the day of the move and stared at the ceiling for a second why he was so nervous and excited at the same time. But then he gasped as he remembered that Samantha would live with them from now on! That was pretty exciting, he thought. Then he grimaced as he remembered the movers coming in and climbed out of bed, he carried his Doggie with him as he ran to Nagase’s room and threw it open.

“Tomo!” he gasped and waited until the man looked at him a bit tired, but also worried as he sat up.

“Little one, why are you up already?” Nagase groaned as he sat up and checked his alarm. It was not even four. Granted the sun was already up since it was summer and the birds probably were already loud but he had made sure that Kazu’s window was tightly closed so he wouldn’t be woken by them.

“Will the movers come soon? I need to get ready to stay out, right? Sato-nii will also need to get ready right?! Will we help Sami?”

“Oh Kazu,” Nagase sighed and stood to pick him up and carry him to bed. “It is way too early. Look it is not even four am. We don’t need to fear anything until ten am, and Sami will call us when the movers leave her apartment.”

“So I disturbed you?” Kazu asked with a sad frown on his face.

“No, you didn’t disturb me. But that means we can snuggle a bit and maybe go back to sleep. Do you have any wishes for breakfast, little one?”

“Cold chocolate milk,” he hummed.

“If the rest of your breakfast is healthy I can agree to that,” Nagase chuckled.

“Fruits and yoghurt and cereal?”

Nagase chuckled as he ruffled his hair and nodded. He patted his side softly as Kazu babbled on which kind of fruits he would like and which kind of cereal from the ones Nagase had he would like which included normal oats and a nuts mix with a bit of honey dribbled on top as he slowly fell back to sleep. Nagase smiled as he pushed his hair out of his forehead and pressed a kiss against it before making sure both of them were under the blanket as he got back to sleep again for the next few hours until it was time to start the day and get ready. He left Kazu alone for a moment to check on Satoshi and wake the older boy and then went back to wake Kazu. He thought Satoshi would appreciate to have not an over-excited brother to wake him up as well.

Kazu got his wish for breakfast and soon enough the boy was back in his room to “pack” a small backpack with the things he wanted to have on him. He frowned down at the colouring books he had gotten over the last few weeks to decide which one he wanted to take. He already packed his favourite pencil set, a game that he and Satoshi played lately and a small gaming device where he had to put rings over fishes to catch them. He got better at that one and it was fun to play for a while. Then also a hat and suncream because it was sunny outside and Nagase always reminded them to make sure not to get sunburn! He didn’t want that because he was sure that it was not a nice thing.

When he was happy with what he got he took his favourite big towel to lie down and put on the big chair where he could snuggle up with Yuki. Oh, that was going to be fun!

“Sato-nii, are you excited?” Kazu asked as he barged into Satoshi’s room, after a minuscule knock but without waiting to be allowed.

Satoshi furrowed his brows but then chuckled because the other was so excited it was hard to be angry at him.

“A whole day outside with you having fun? Of course, I am excited,” he chuckled. “Did you get everything you wanted?”

“YES!” Kazu flinched when the telephone rang and Ohno smiled as he patted his head and got his drawing materials. There was not much that he wanted to do after all and he would prefer to just stay in his room, but he knew that it was better for Kazu and it didn’t matter if he spent the day in his room or out to draw or play a few games with the younger boy.

-

“Sami are the movers scary?” Kazu asked in a hushed voice when he was allowed the phone. “Were they nice to you?”

“They were really nice to me. They packed all things up and were very careful with the piano because I told them it is very important.”

“It is!” Kazu said with a giggle. “And good if they were nice. Tomo doesn’t have to scold them then.”

She laughed softly and hummed in agreement. “True. So we will come over now. Do you have everything you need for outside? I will come to greet you ne?”

“Uhn! I can make a fancy drink for you. We have little umbrellas,” Kazu explained and she agreed that it was a good idea. They then ended the call and Kazu gave the phone back to Nagase, before running out with Yuki on his heels to play fetch with the dog.

Satoshi sat on the table, thanking Nagase for the watermelon and drinks he brought outside together with a cooler box with some gummy bears and chocolate for the boys since he had promised Kazu treats after all.

Most of the day was spend with Kazu and Satoshi outside either drawing or playing a game in the garden with Kazu sometimes looking inside the house to see if the movers were finally away, just to see one of them running around each time. At least he could be sure that Nagase and Samantha were still around since they regularly checked upon them.

But when it all was done Samantha and Nagase came outside with new drinks and ice cream bowls for them to celebrate the successful move and Kazu was overly happy for that sweet treat.

“Now you will stay with us forever and ever?” Kazu asked with big hopeful eyes and Samantha nodded with a smile.

“That is the plan.”

“Yay,” he cried out in happiness and clapped his hands at the promise. “Right it’s good ne Sato-nii?”

Satoshi was licking a bit of caramel sauce from his wrist at the question and blinked before he nodded. “Of course,” he said a bit calmer but with a very honest smile. He was happy for Nagase and Samantha even if the thought was a bit strange but he was also very happy to have Samantha close all the time now.

After their afternoon snack, Kazu and Samantha went for a walk with Yuki while Satoshi and Nagase prepared their barbecue for the dinner.

“You okay, kid?”

Satoshi blinked but then nodded with a chuckle. “Yes, it’ll be strange, but she was over often already… The wedding will be a bit strange though,” he sighed.

“Worried?”

Satoshi shrugged. “I can’t call her mum, but Samantha said that is fine. So it’ll be good. I always worry what if you get a real child of your own?”

“You are a real child of mine. As is Kazu,” Nagase sighed. “That will never change, and it is the same for Samantha, I promise.”

Satoshi looked at him for a while and then nodded in agreement. He couldn’t do anything but believe Nagase after all.

-

Kazu rolled around on his bed with a big sigh as he stared at his Mr Bear and Doggie. He knew that they were just toys and could not protect him, but he still felt better with them around. They were something familiar and it was hard to be scared or feeling not loved with them around. But he couldn’t sleep.

He had tried to hug them close to himself, talked to them under the blanket and put on a little light which made stars appear all around him. It was normally enough to make him sleep when he felt very sad because of his mother, but it seemed not to like it tonight.

He nibbled on his lower lip and held his breath as he listened for any sounds. Maybe Tomo and Sami were still up, he thought. Then he could go there.

But it was completely silent apart from some sounds that Kazu had already learnt was the wood working, outside noises and water running through pipes, no monsters or ghosts so there was no danger around for him. He slipped out of bed as he felt close to tears because he didn’t feel good.

He held Doggie close as he sneaked through the hallways until he stood in front of Nagase’s door. He stared at the closed door that he knew hid not only Tomo but Sami as well. It was not the first night that Sami was staying over but then she was just visiting and that was different from sharing the same home. But Samantha had told him that she didn’t mind them coming in if they had a bad dream. But he didn’t have a bad dream!

He hopped from one foot to the other but then he opened the door to sneak a glance in before he slipped inside and to Tomo’s side of the bed to pull at his shirt. “Tomo,” he whispered.

Nagase opened his eyes sleepily and then smiled as he saw Kazu at the side of his bed. “What is wrong, little one?”

“Min head is all woosh woosh,” he said and waved his hands helplessly. “I don’t like it.”

“Aww, do you think a cuddle can make it better?”

Kazu nodded and smiled when Nagase allowed him to climb into bed and under the blanket as he put him in the middle. “I’m not disturbing?”

“Of course not,” Nagase said and Kazu stared at him for a moment, before he nodded.

“Okay,” he whispered then still a bit insecure about disturbing Samantha. But there was movement from her side and a hand ruffled his hair.

“I’m always up for a cuddle,” she said with a smile. “Don’t worry, okay?”

Kazu smiled brightly as he nodded in answer. “Uhn. Goodnight, Tomo, Goodnight, Sami.”

“Goodnight, Kazu”, they echoed back and as he hugged his toy and fell slowly to sleep, feeling safe and protected between the adults.
