When Ohno arrived Nino was already waiting outside for him. A smile adorned his face as he leant against the door, his hands buried in the pockets of his jeans, and his eyes bright as he caught Ohno’s gaze.
Ohno almost growled as he took the last few steps between them as fast as he could and hugged Nino.
“This is not very polite,” Nino chided. “You should greet my mother first.”
“I’ll apologise,” Ohno whispered as he closed his lips over Nino’s in a scorching kiss that left the younger man breathless and slightly lightheaded. Nino swayed slightly as he rested his forehead against his shoulder, smiling fondly as he tightened his arms around his back.
They stayed like this for a few moments, until Nino hesitantly drew back to look at Ohno. Ohno’s eyes sparkled as he cupped his cheek and caressed his lips with his thumb. Nino took a shuddering breath and for a second his fingers tightened in Ohno’s shirt, now a very shy smile on his face.
“I’m not sure if I survive telling you I love you more often if this is what I get,” he whispered.
Ohno chuckled as he swooped in again to press smaller kisses against the swollen lips, his cheeks and chin. “I might have to learn to hold back while you need to work on your stamina then,” Ohno replied, grinning when that got a loud laugh out of Nino.
“Let’s do that,” Nino agreed, moving close to kiss him again with a small sigh of happiness. He was sure he would not be able to hold back telling Ohno that now that he was so sure about it. Ohno deserved it and he knew that he owed it to the other man. But it was fine. He knew Ohno would never laugh at him or be unhappy to receive those words. He fervently hoped they would never get old.
Ohno stepped back, kissing his forehead lovingly one more time and took his hand in his own. “Come on, let me greet your mother before she chases me down the street.”
“She would never,” Nino snorted. “She is too nice for that.”
Ohno chuckled as he shook his head. He had to agree in a way. She would not chase him away for not greeting her first but her son, but he was sure he would never be able to feel safe again if he hurt her precious son. Not that he ever would do that if he could help it. “Still I need to make a good first impression.”
“I think it is too late for that,” Kazuko’s voice mixed into their conversation and he ducked his head when Nino laughed out loud.
“Sorry,” he said and she shook her head a bit exasperated.
“You two were helpless right from the start when you were teenagers,” she said and winked to him. “I am obliged to tell you that I will throttle you if you ever hurt my baby or cheat on him,” she added almost too happily at the thought and Ohno shuddered.
“Hey! I can look after myself,” Nino complained with a pout. “I don’t need an avenger.”
Ohno and Kazuko shared a look that clearly said that both of them thought differently but instead of saying so Ohno put an arm around Nino’s waist instead and kissed his temple. “I won’t ever do that so we don’t need to find that out,” he promised, smiling at the shy happiness that radiated from Nino.
Kazuko laughed with a head shake and gestured to the kitchen. “Dinner?”
“Sounds good,” Ohno agreed while Nino nodded happily.
-
“Oh-chan?”
“Mhm?” Ohno whispered back as he rolled to his side. They were in the old bedroom of Nino, surrounded by darkness only with the light of the street lamps from where the shutters didn’t close properly. Still, Ohno was sure that he would always be able to see Nino. As it was he could see the big bright eyes of the other and couldn’t do anything else but draw him into his arms.
Nino resisted just for a second before a sigh left his lips and he snuggled up to the other, taking the comfort that he so dearly wanted.
“What is going on in your head?”
“Thank you for always putting up with me,” Nino whispered, glancing up at him for a second. “I’m sure it’s not easy.”
“I am not just putting up with you,” Ohno disagreed. “That sounds as if it is a chore to be with you which it’s not. I love you and I am so happy with all the trust you gift me with.”
Nino shyly ducked his head and pressed closer against him. It was hard to describe what was different for him to be with Ohno than it was with his ex-boyfriends. He was more nervous that was for sure, but this was also more important for him. He never wanted to lose Ohno.
“And I’m proud of you.”
“Huh? What did I do?”
“You told your mum so easily.”
“It was not easy, I was ready to run.”
“Still you told her. And you only tell her things that are important.”
“You are important,” Nino mumbled, his cheeks red. “The most important one in my life now. I like that, but it also scares me. I know I am not easy to deal with.”
“Neither am I.”
“You are the best,” Nino disagreed.
Ohno chuckled and buried his nose in Nino’s hair. It was still slightly wet from the shower earlier and Ohno was thankful that they could talk about such things in the comfort of Nino’s family home. He could tell he felt better here. Maybe because Kazuko would always be on his side, regardless of how stupid Nino might behave.
“I am also stubborn, like to be on my own, forget the time if I am drawing, forget about dates, like to go out fishing early in the morning without telling people and I often forget to answer messages,” he said and giggled as he could feel Nino wrinkle his nose because he was so close to him.
“I don’t mind that,” he mumbled. Which was the truth. Yes, it could be annoying if Ohno forgot that they were supposed to meet up but it happened very seldom and he could always call the other and Ohno would rush over which had its own merits.
“And I don’t mind your need to run away first when things get too much to handle, because I know you always will come back once your thoughts have settled. I don’t mind you playing games on end and I love when you get lost in your music.”
“But…”
Ohno shook his head and lifted his chin to put a kiss on his lips. “And I don’t mind that you are shy when it comes to relationships. I know your feelings that is enough for me.”
“Jun was really unhappy. He told me I am just using you,” Nino whispered and Ohno sighed as he hugged him more closely.
“He just wants to protect us both.”
“I know, but it hurt. I would never use you.”
“I know that.”
“I threw him out. Told him to leave. I’m sure he is angry with me now. Aiba as well.”
“I’m sure he isn’t, you showed them that you are serious.”
Nino blinked and looked up in surprise. “How so?”
“Because you stood up for yourself and me. For us. You didn’t let them badmouth or talk down to you. It shows that you are serious. If they were right you would have stayed silent and shrunk into yourself. They also know you, Nino.”
Nino furrowed his brows, making Ohno smile as he put his forehead against Nino’s giggling when Nino got slightly cross-eyed.
“You, my dear Nino, like to hide the truth from yourself, but if your friends confront you with it you never can deny it even if you don’t like it.”
“I don’t like lying to you.”
“Exactly. They are not angry.”
“You sure?”
“I promise.”
Nino smiled and finally closed his eyes again as he settled down fully. “Thank you.”
“Always, good night my love.”
Nino felt himself grow warm all over at those words and he decided that he really really liked that term. It was not as cheesy as he always had thought when it was Ohno who used it.
-
“Thanks, mum for letting us crash,” Nino said and hugged her one last time.
“Sure, I can’t believe you both missed the last train. Aren’t you supposed to be adults?”
Nino stuck out his tongue and put on his boots.
“You sure you don’t want to stay for breakfast?”
“No, we have things planned,” he answered and looked at Ohno who was checking his bag if he had everything and then put on his jacket.
“Okay, take care. And I expect you to come to visit again soon. Both of you.”
“Sure, mum,” Nino said and giggled when she pinched his cheek.
“Are you both ready?” Ohno asked and Nino nodded as he stood straight again and took his hand.
“Sure let’s go. Bye, mum.”
“Goodbye Ninomiya-san,” Ohno said with a smile and she nodded.
“Goodbye, you two.”
Nino grinned at Ohno when they were back on the street and jostled his shoulder with his own. “Do you think your parents would be okay if we ambush them for breakfast?”
“If we bring gifts,” Ohno said with a smile and looked at him. “You sure you want to go there this morning?”
Nino hummed in thought as he automatically directed his feet to where Ohno’s family lived. It was not too far from his own home probably 30 minutes by foot, which sounded like a nice early morning walk to him. He chuckled at his thoughts, who would have thought that taking walks with Ohno would start to become one of his favourite activities?
“Yes, it’s only fair, right? Mum knows, our close friends know, only they don’t or did you tell them?”
“No, I wanted to wait until you were sure.”
“Then let’s go. We can stop at the bakery on the way there.”
“Sounds good,” Ohno agreed and put his arm around Nino’s shoulder as they continued their walk finally. Nino hid a happy smile at the thought of how easily Ohno did things like that out in the open.
Nino let Ohno chose the baked goods for them as he looked around the shop and waited for him. He was a bit nervous, there was no denying it but it was not too bad, which surprised him a lot. After they paid they directly walked to Ohno’s parents and Nino let Ohno ring the bell.
“Nervous?”
“A little,” Nino nodded and Ohno smiled fondly down at him and squeezed his hand for a moment as the door opened.
“Satoshi, Ninomiya-kun what are you doing here?” Ohno-san asked surprised and Ohno smiled.
“We were in the neighbourhood and thought that we could have breakfast together,” he explained and lifted the bag.
She frowned but then nodded, still a bit surprised as she let them in. “That’s a nice surprise. I don’t think you brought coffee?”
“I would prefer your homemade one. What about you Nino?”
“Me too,” he said as he slipped out of his shoes and followed the other two inside.
“Satoshi!” his father exclaimed surprised as he saw them enter.
“Hi dad, we thought we join you for breakfast. I bought chocolate pans.”
Nino snorted and looked at Ohno. “Very healthy and breakfast like,” he said.
“I bought you a cream pan and melon pan so don’t whine.”
Nino hid a happy smile at those words and greeted Ohno’s father as well. They settled down around the table in silence as Ohno’s mother served them coffee and put the bread that Ohno bought on a plate for them to take.
“So what brought this surprise visit up? You live in another side of town,” she said as they all sat down and Nino took a small sip of his coffee as to not have to answer as he glanced at Ohno.
“We were at Nino’s mum’s place overnight,” Ohno said and Nino nodded. “So we really were in the neighbourhood.”
She nodded but still looked at them waiting for further explanations.
Ohno smirked at her annoyed sigh and Ohno hit his side. Ohno looked at him for a second and then looked back again and Nino rolled his eyes.
“Oh-chan,” he hissed, feeling nervousness rise inside of him again the longer he didn’t tell his parents. Maybe Ohno was ashamed?
“Sorry,” Ohno said and squeezed his hand again, putting their intertwined fingers on top of the table. “Nino and I married when we were in Hawaii. We are a happily married couple and thought you should know.”
“What?” his mother said and Nino adverted his eyes as he picked at his melon pan. Ohno cleared his throat and rubbed his hand with his thumb softly, helping him to relax as he calmly explained to his parents what was going on until they accepted it and were happy for them. Nino couldn’t help the relieved smile and grinned when they finally bid their goodbyes to go home.
“Happy?” Ohno asked as he saw the bright glittering eyes of Nino and the wide smile when they were on their way to the station.
“Very relieved,” Nino whispered.
“I told you our way is perfect as long as it works for us.”
Nino frowned, but then giggled as he stepped closer and leant against Ohno’s side enjoying the warmth around his body the second Ohno hugged him with an arm. Ohno was right they were good as it was.
