Maverick~Diamond in the Rough
Rewatched this one yesterday and now I am listening to it again at work. This is another Bart episode I really enjoy (in fact I enjoyed it even more the 2nd time).
It's more an honorable mention as it does have a few issues that prevent it from being a favorite. One the preview of the episode gives away the con. I actually normally dislike the previews in Maverick. I am not really sure why they needed to show a scene from the episode when the scene they chose was usually completely random and didn't make me think "oh I want to see what happens" or at times like in this episode it would spoil the episode.
Another thing I didn't like about this episode is the ending scene. It felt tacked on where Bart suddenly realized he may be in love with the female character at the end (who confessed to him earlier) but by the end of the episode she is in love with someone else. Both Bart's feelings and this new romance sort of come out of nowhere. One thing that stands out to me about Maverick is the series has some of the best endings which usually left me smiling this one felt tacked on like they were trying to tie up some loose ends.
But that being said the rest of the episode is very cute. It is actually based on a real historical event of a diamond con (something that I felt made the episode even more interesting). Both the countesses in the episode where also actual European actresses and had a cute relationship with Bart. I like how Bart was honest that he was using them to get back at someone & they were fine with this. And of course I like how when something is taken from Bart he ONLY takes what is owed him not more and helps others get their money back (this is one of my favorite things about Maverick).
I've also been thinking about it and I think the more "drawing room settings" worked better as Bart episodes than Bret. I felt Bart worked in the light comedy sophisticated settings better. This is something that the writers didn't seem to get in later seasons and wrote Bart in many episodes that would have been better for Bret. One exception would be the Art Lovers in season 5 and no surprise that this is one of the better 5th Season offerings.
