TCM and Anime

And double posting today!

1) For me this is the best season of anime in a long time, 3 episodes in and I am loving every show I am watching (well except maybe No. 6 but that is a fun guilty pleasure).

Episode 3 of Ikoku Meiro no Croisee was great (it was just licensed too) and 3rd episode of Natsume Yuujinchou ranks up there with my favorite episodes of the previous season (I am working on a Natsume post soon).

And I am still loving Mawaru Penguindrum it's so surreal and fun to watch & discuss. There is a lot of silly stuff but there are definitely hints of deeper stuff underneath

Reminds me of my favorite character from Utena (there was even a Banana Peel scene)

And despite the fact that it is a bit fanservicey, I do love Lily Hoshino's art work

Although I don't think I actually will be posting about the series each week, because I know I will run out of things to say. If there is something to say I will post it though. Maybe later on I will try to talk about some of the symbolism, especially the use of train motifs which I love.

2) Anyways I just saw more of the TCM October Schedule. Besides Buster Keaton as SOTM (which has already made me faint) they have a the best line up of horror films I have seen from the channel in awhile. I know they didn't honor Vincent Price on his centennial but some of his films will be playing in October (including House on the Haunted Hill & House of Wax), they are also showing some Val Lewton films, The Body Snatcher, and Night of The Living Dead. Not a lot of Universal films but they are showing Frankenstein. And also two great 30's horror films not from Universal: Freaks & Jekyll & Hyde. Plus famous horror silents like Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari & Phantom of the Opera. I am actually not a big horror film fan at all (Classic or otherwise) but it is October so that's when I enjoy to watch them.

And finally if this month was not awesome enough they are doing a month long tribute to director Nicholas Ray Finally Bigger than Life with James Mason will be on the schedule (recording for sure!) and also Johnny Guitar & Lusty Men both of which I wanted to see for the longest time.

Nicholas Ray is a weird director for me, first film I saw of his is arguably his most famous Rebel Without a Cause and just didn't care for it at all. But then I saw films like Bigger than Life, In a Lonely Place, On Dangerous Ground, They Live By Night and fell in love. Maybe the lesson is don't judge a director by his most well known film (same thing happened to me with Red Shoes and Powell & Pressburger, only film of theirs I didn't completely love, although I think I need to revisit that one).
