Avatar~ Nearly Caught Up

I was upset about RL stuff last night so to make myself feel better I immerse myself in fantasy LOL. But anyways I went a little crazy yesterday and started downloading and watching a bunch of avatar episodes. I sort of regret it because I went to sleep too late last night. But I am now finished with season 1 and nearly finished with season 2 (this weekend I’ll finish for sure). But the show did cheer me up a lot.

This is a really great show that can stand up to many anime titles and can certainly stand up with the shounen genre (if it was an anime it would most likely be in this category). I would even go as far as saying as it is more innovative than a lot of shounen anime series. But I hate comparing this show to an anime. True the show is clearly influenced by anime but that is not what makes this a great series. Avatar is a great series because it has an excellent storyline with excellent characters. In fact it has everyone you would want in a good fantasy series: an interesting world, fun character (both good and evil), great action sequences and a superb story. Oh and it has an excellent voice cast.

Really it fills my heart with joy that whoever created this show to be anime-like did not stop at the appearance but actually took the time to develop rich characters and storylines. Thank You! I have now renewed my faith in American animation.

Although I really like all the characters both villains and good guys and I really like the main cast of characters I do have a personal love for Zuko and Iroh and their relationship. Zuko is such a wonderful anti-hero type character. The way he is being developed in the series is absolutely perfect. You can pretty much tell from the beginning through little moments that he is not a bad guy he just makes some wrong choices. To often when a villain becomes good it comes out of nowhere (because the writer doesn’t know what else to do with the character) but with Zuko his development seems planned from the beginning.

To add to this Iroh is quite possibly the best mentor character ever. His character is strong and wise but not all powerful or all knowing. Iroh patiently guides Zuko through all his tantrums never telling Zuko what to do but adding moments of humorous and wisdom to help guide his nephew. Zuko wants to regain the respect of his father who banished him but in truth Zuko has the love and respect of a much better father in Iroh.

And not to rant about fans but why the hell is there all this Zuko/Katara stuff a relationship that doesn’t even exist in the show but I can barely find anything on Zuko and Iroh’s relationship? Yes I know it’s not a romance but does that make it less meaningful to people?

Even in Aang’s group I like the friendship of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and now Toph more than any possible romances between the characters. Well I do like Sokka/Suki.

Anyways I am now obsessed with this Zuko/Iroh video. As far as music videos go it’s not the best technically but the song really does fit their relationship perfectly. Spoilers so be warned.
