The Best Cary Grant/Hitchcock Film

I am bored so a random Cary Grant post:

I can never decide between Notorious and North by Northwest. They are both incredible but in different ways.

Notorious has my favorite Hitchcock romance. I just love the chemistry between Cary (Devlin) and Ingrid (Alicia). Although I consider Notorious more of Ingrid Bergman's film than Cary (and it's my favorite performance by her) I love that we get to see a darker side to Cary Grant in this film. The movie is about two people who love each other but out of jealousy and anger they hurt each other instead of admitting their feelings. Even considering the ending when he comes out as "heroic" you can interpret it differently since he didn't really need to let Claude Rains (Sebastian) die. Claude Rains character would of had a lot of information about the Nazi spys. And speaking of Claude Rains he was also fantastic in this film. I also love how Hitchcock was one of the 1st film makers to have the Nazis as threat after the war.

My favorite scenes

* the long kiss when they are whispering and quick kisses and whispering. Hitchcock getting past the code.
* When Alicia first sees Sebastian on the horse, she rides up to him and you can see how jealous Devlin is in his eyes.
* "Dry your eyes, baby; it's out of character"

North by Northwest is Cary Grant in his more set screen persona. But Hitchcock took everything from that screen persona and used it perfectly in the film from the humor to the charm. And although I don't love Cary Grant & Eva Marie Saint as much as Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman, the word play and innuendo in this film between them was so much fun (Hollywood had a bad habit of pairing up older men and younger women at this point. I hate it but at least I could believe an older Cary Grant could still make women of all ages fall for him). This is Hitchcock's best "wrong man" film. Although I am also very much in love with The 39 Steps.

Another thing that stands out in this film is the action sequences. Today action sequences are largely forgettable: explosions and shaky camera scenes. In North by Northwest there really is only two notable action scenes. One in a corn field & one on Mt. Rushmore. Only two but they are two that people never forget. People are familiar with these scenes even if they have never seen the film. That's how you direct an action scene.

I also love love James Mason in this film. My favorite Hitchcock villain. XD. As for my favorite scene in this film it has to be the auction scene....hilarious.

Both great films that I can't choose between. In the end Rear Window cancels them both out as my favorite Hitchcock film though. :)

Quick Edit AHHH djdjfjwkdfkfspffjdkkfk the full Hagaren chapter 103 is out. I already posted most of my thoughts on the bad RAW but I will simply say: Ed, Mei & Scar so much love in this chapter ♥
