Pygmalion VS My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady has for a very long time been one of my favorite musicals. Yes despite the fact that Julie Andrews did not get to play the part and Audrey Hepburn was dubbed I still love the movie. I first saw it in my HS class Ethics in Literature (which was the best class I had in HS as it introduced me to a lot of great books & movies including this one) and it happened to be the first Audrey Hepburn film I saw. I have said many times how much of an Audrey Hepburn lover I am but I think in this movie I might have fallen in love with Rex Harrison's version of Henry Higgins even more. But I love everything about this film the songs, the costumes, the story.....

But I actually ended up loving the non-musical version from the 30's Pygmalion just as much (I think it might be a testament to how great the original play was, which I also read and loved). This film starred Leslie Howard & Wendy Miller as Higgins and Eliza and they were both excellent in their respective roles. In fact I was so surprised how much I loved Leslie Howard in this because he is probably the one actor in Gone with the Wind I was never entirely sold on. But Howard was really great here, you can tell how much he was into the role (apparently he also co-directed). And while I didn't think Wendy Miller played the duchess part as well as Audrey Hepburn, her cockney in the earlier parts were excellent. I also loved the chemistry Higgins and Eliza at the end in this version. You can just feel the chemistry and Wendy Miller really showed how much her Eliza had grown as a character.

And now it looks like there is going to be a modern version of the musical apparently starring Keira Knightley and Daniel Craig. I am not sure how I feel about that but I guess I am willing to give it a chance since I love the story so much. Although part of me wishes they had done another non-musical version of George Bernard Shaw's play and maybe kept his original ending instead just to be different from the previous film versions.
