I don't really like really scary things but I don't mind thrills from time to time so here are some favorites of mine:
Favorite Movies
1) Arsenic & Old Lace: I love this movie a little too much. After all it has 3 of my favorite things: Cary Grant, Peter Lorre, and Edward Everett Horton. My second favorite Capra film (well It Happened One Night is my favorite). But really it's such a delicious black comedy that never fails to put a smile on my face.
Watch the Full Thing Here 2) Jekyll & Hyde (1931-1932): This is my favorite monster movie and I think it should be more well known. It stars Fredric March & Miriam Hopkins and was directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Not only is it fun to watch as a horror movie it's also fun to watch as an early talkie. The film is filled with symbolism and creative film techniques. I don't think all the techniques work but the raw creativity is a joy to watch. The film was also made before the production code was enforced so there is a lot of things in the film they wouldn't be able to get away with a few years later. And sure Hyde's makeup is a bit silly at first glance but March's performance still makes me shudder. Yeah I love this film.
3) Nightmare before Christmas: Or is this a Christmas movie. I never can tell. But I still think this is my favorite claymation film. And while the story was written by Tim Burton I wish people would not forget that it was directed by David Selick.
4) Most anything by Hitchcock Well my favorites are: Rear Window, North by Northwest, Notorious, Dial M for Murder, Vertigo, & The 39 Steps.
5) Ugetsu monogatari: A traditional Japanese ghost story.
Favorite Anime
1) Ghost Hunt: This obviously fits but it has both great thrills and fun characters.
2) Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales~Bake Neko: For a more traditional horror story
3) Kiki's Delivery Service Well she is a witch. One of my favorites from Miyazaki. :)
4)Mushishi : It's more beautiful than scary but I feel it has a horror aspect to it.
Favorite Reading Material
1) Dracula Forget Twilight! This isn't necessarily the first vampire story but it's certainly the story that made vampires mainstream. It's also ahead of its time in many ways.
2) Coraline & The Graveyard Book : Both written by Neil Gaiman and both are wonderful magical tales.
3) Howl's Moving Castle: The book is better than the anime. Sorry Miyazaki!
A lot of these are obvious and not even really scary but I had fun listing them. :)
