Sleepless in Seattle

So this is one of those famous movies that I had never seen but always heard how good it was. It also made AFI's top 10 best romantic comedies (of the ones I saw on that list I like them all except this one). However I have to say Sleepless in Seattle has to be one of the most overrated romantic comedies I can think of. It's not very romantic or

Oh rom coms.

Yeah I am not a fan of Sleepless, I am not a fan most romantic comedies actually.

And that whole concept creeps me out.

While I think there are definitely worse Rom coms compared to Sleepless what gets me is so many people seem to consider this film one of the gold standards. I find it an embarrassment. There are so many rom coms out there that are so much better although not really recent ones

Outside of the classics, the last rom com that i honestly enjoyed was 10 Things I Hate About You, but that was because I adored the character of Kat Stratford, and that unlike most rom coms heroines, never really had to compromise herself for the sake of a guy, and that her one goal was not and continued not to get the guy.

I don't get a lot of the gold standards either. For instance, I can't stand Pretty Woman (or most any Julia Roberts rom com)

I think if I was going to change the top 10 I would take off Sleepless in Seattle and put on Princess Bride (for a newer Rom-com). But yeah my favorite romantic comedies are the classics. The screwballs from the depression era were especially brilliant. The women and men were on equal terms and the script relied on wit instead of the sappiness and stupid humor we get today.

And I actuallyenjoy both Ten Things and Pretty Woman, although neither are favorites of mine.

What I hate about most current romantic comedies is that they usually follow a career woman and make her act like hormone driven teenager whose only concern is to the get the guy or get married. Oh, and usually the guys in them are complete and utter jerks. And usually there are ton of scenes where she is usually humiliated or patronized or demeaned in some way.
