After seeing this I had to go search out that review, and man, did the reviewer even read the manga? Their entire review seems to be based on the art and first impressions of the characters. They seem to have missed the point that every character in the series is the way they are for a reason, and that through the "standalone episodes that somehow involve eating (excessively), drinking (even more excessively), or vacationing (what about school?)" we find out what drives each character and why they are the way they are
( ... )
So much that the reviewer said about the series was so completely inaccurate you wonder if she just went in hating the series before she even read the manga. Of course some people just don't like slice of life, nothing wrong with that. But to write it off as the worst piece of crap ever is just I don't know. Especially when I see actually bad series on ANN got average or even good scores. And it really did feel like she was attacking instead of doing a thorough review of saying why some people might like the series and why others might not.
I completely agree. :) She's not my favorite character either, but she is certainly not a moe or fanservicey character in the least. She's certainly a bit on the odd side, but I overall really liked watching the trials and tribulations she went through. She is a realistic and complex character, and it was nice to see a character with psychological issues not caused by extreme, angsty situations--but something a real person could go through. I could understand her drive to create art as well, and all the difficulties that go with that.
Well I guess I understand why someone who only read the first two volumes of the manga or saw only a few episodes would get the wrong impression of Hagu...I did too at first. But then you shouldn't judge the entire series by Hagu anyways because she is only one character and not even the main character.
But the fact is there is a lot more to her than meets the eye. And I like when I think a character is one thing and they turn out to be something else. That is what good writing is to me.
