POI thinky thoughts

Still trying to figure out why John was angry with the machine.
Here's the thing:

1. Simmons was in the alley waiting for John to be released.

2. The machine had already given them John's number, and Simmons was still on the loose, so no further warning should have been needed.

3. The phone rang but Harold did not answer it. We will never know whose number he would have been given; John again, or Joss. If John is angry with Harold, I think this is why, although what could he have done? Shouted ' look out' when Simmons hadn't shown himself yet?

4. John was the first target. Simmons was probably there for him. Getting Carter was a bonus. John was not armed. If Joss had not been with him, he would probably be dead, and very likely Harold, too. I think this is the crux of it - John does not think anyone should have to protect him and definitely no one should die for him.

Someone on pofinterest_chat said John hated himself after her death and I think that was a big part of it. I think it hurts that she's gone and he doesn't know how to handle that much emotional pain. I think he hates himself for being alive when she's dead, for not being able to protect her this time, and for having to be protected. I think walking away and crawling into a bottle is the only way he knows to deal with it, although it looked like he was remaining more functional this time, that he wasn't going to lose himself, because she had wanted him to promise her he wouldn't. And I think maybe he was a little angry with Joss herself, for trying to do it all on her own, and not asking for help sooner. What if Finch had been able to vet the Judge? Or suggest another one (Gates?)

So I don't think he was really mad at the machine, I think it was more a convenient focus for anger that was aimed in several directions.
