For Vexed, Happy Bday…
Dean pulled the glass door open and motioned for Sammy to go inside. He had heard the library had a reading hour for little kids and it seemed like the kind of thing Sammy would like. After ushering his brother inside, Dean marched the two of them up to the front desk.
“Excuse me, ma’am, do you know where the reading hour is?” Dean said with a smile.
She looked up at him. Lowering her glasses a bit, she smiled back at him.
“My little brother wants to hear a story.”
“Yeah,” Sammy added. “Please?”
The woman leaned forward. “Well, aren’t you two the sweetest.”
“Thanks,” Dean said. “So where is it?”
“I’m sorry, honey, that was yesterday.” At their disappointed looks she added, “But you’re welcome to take out a book and read it at home.”
“Can we read it here?” Dean said. He hoped she would say, “Yes,” as he was afraid Dad would show up later and tell them they were going to a new town. Besides, neither one of them had a library card.
“You can. Just remember to read softly so you don’t disturb the other patrons.’
“Yes, ma’am.” Turning to Sammy, Dean said, “Come on, Sammy.”
“We leaving already, Dean?”
“No, Squirt, just going to find the kid books.” He took Sammy by the hand and they turned to go.
“Boys, it’s that way,” the woman pointed to the right.
“Thanks!” Dean said as they headed in the correct direction.
Sammy’s eyes went wide as they entered the children’s library section. The walls were brightly painted with murals of beloved storybook characters. The furniture was soft and kid sized, and the cherry on top was the rows upon rows of books. “Wow!” he said softly.
“You like?” Dean said.
Sammy nodded. It was all he could do to keep from letting go of his brother’s hand. Sammy wanted to explore and find a book for Dean to read to him so badly it made his tummy hurt. His face lit up when Dean gave him a gentle tug and steered them towards a rack of books.
“See anything you like, Sammy?”
He nodded and letting go of Dean’s hand, Sammy picked a book at random. He handed it to his brother.
“That looks good,” Dean said as Sammy pulled out two more books.
“How about these too?”
Dean could not resist it whenever Sammy turned those huge hazel eyes at him. “Sue. Let’s read those first and when we’re done, we’ll get another stack, okay?”
“Yeah!” Sammy grinned from ear to ear. He dutifully followed Dean over to one of the kid sized couches. Snuggling up to his brother, Sammy listened intently while Dean read to him. When that stack was finished, he carefully placed the books in a bin the librarians had set up for books to be reshelved. Sammy came back to where Dean was sitting with books in hand.
“More?” Dean teased. He took the books from his brother and motioned for him to sit.
“Yeah!” Sammy did not need to be told twice. He sat down next to Dean and waited with bated breath for him to pick a new book to read.
The two of them spent the morning quietly reading at the lirbrary. Even though he knew it would be wrong, Dean wished he could “borrow” the books permanently, as Sammy loved them.
Two hours later, John found them, sitting in the kids’ section of the library. He smiled to himself, proud of how Dean was looking after his little brother. John watched them for several heartbeats, before calling out to them, “Come on, boys, it’s time to go!”
“Ssh, Daddy!” Sammy hissed. “You’re post-a be quiet here, Right Dean.”
“Yup, but we need to go, Sammy.”
“Okay…” Sammy gathered the books and slowly took them over to the bin. He sadly placed them inside.
It tore at Dean’s heart. “Come on, Sammy, there’ll be libraries in the next town, right, Daddy?”
“Right. Now let’s go! I’ve got another job, I need to do.”
“Can we visit Uncle Bobby?”
John frowned as he thought it over. “Yeah. If you hurry, we can be there by dinner. Now let’s go!” John ushered the boys towards the exit.
Sammy paused outside. He turned and waved at the library, before scampering off after his father and brother. Sammy smiled. Uncle Bobby had books too. He hoped Dean would read some of them to him too.
