Max, named after the current king of Madrona, urged his horse into a trot. Tomorrow was Sinterklass and he wanted to be home for the holidays. He had a young wife waiting for him and he missed her terribly. A silversmith, he tended to travel from town to town, selling his wares. He did very well a few days ago, when the Grand Duke of Saint-Germaine bought several of his pieces for his beloved Kitten.

A big bear of a man, no one on the road suspected him of being anything other than a brigand, so they left him alone. He was sure if had taken after his father, Max would have been robbed a hundred times over. His father was a wisp of a man, but a brilliant silversmith, who had passed on his trade to his son before he died.

As Max rounded the bend, his home came into sight. He nudged his horse to go faster as a light snow began to fall. The horse, sensing home, cantered the last few feet, eager to get to his nice warm stall.

Home, Max led his horse to the stable. He unsaddled him and wiped him down, before turning him loose in his stall. Max fed him and the horse settled down for the night.

Grabbing his saddle bag, Max left the stable and headed towards his house. He laughed when he saw his wife waiting for him in the doorway. Somehow, she always knew when he was home.

“Happy Sinterklass tidings, Max,” she said as he gathered her in his arms and kissed her cheek.

“Same to you, Heidi!” Max kissed her again. “It’s good to be home!”

“It’s good to have you here. Now, come! You must be starving!” Heidi shooed him into the house, shutting the door behind them.

The next thing Max knew, he was sitting at the table, enjoying the roast goose and turnips, while his wife counted the money he had made and entered it into her ledger. He sighed contentedly, thinking the Castus people were lucky as they traveled together as a family, before deciding coming home was even better, especially when one was home for the holidays.
