For Erin with love… Happy Holidays!
Sam looked up from his laptop. His brother, Dean, seemed to be really into the holiday spirit this year and Sam found it rather unsettling. While he had always made an effort to celebrate Christmas and birthdays, going out of his way to get Sam something “special” as a gift, it all ended the year he got him a Barbie doll and a baton, and tried to laugh it off as Santa thinking Sam was a girl.
This was like shades of “younger Dean” mixed with the Tasmanian Devil. Sam shook his head at the human whirlwind of festive activity. Garland was wrapped around anything and everything, stockings were hung on the fireplace mantel with care, a ten foot spruce was cut down from the woods surrounding the bunker and decorated with every Christmas ornament Dean could get his hands on, holiday lights were strung up, and mistletoe hung from every doorway. Poor Cas was kissed so many times his eyes immediately flew upwards every time he heard Dean’s voice.
Still, as annoying as this was, it was hard to get angry at Dean. In the right light, the expression on his face did make him look like a little kid again and Sam felt his “bah humbug-ness” fading as it got closer to Christmas. Even at his most cynical, Sam had to admit, Photoshopping Cas’s face onto a picture of angel and turning it into their tree topper was a stroke of genius, but this was getting out of hand.
“Uh, Dean, you want to chill for a bit?” Sam said as he closed his laptop.
“What?” Dean half ignored him as he tossed another handful of tinsel onto the tree.
Sam sighed and tiredly pinched the bridge of his nose. An evil thought crossed his mind as he chuckled wickedly to himself. “Hey, Dean, Mom’s dating Crowley and she’s spending Christmas in Hell.”
“WHAT?!” Dean spun around, looking ready to kill.
Sam grinned. That certainly got his attention… “You need to chill,” he called out.
Dean hurried over to him. “What was that about Mom?”
“Nothing, Dean. I was just trying to get your attention.”
Dean narrowed his eyes at him. He studied his brother’s face, almost daring him to say something. “Bitch!”
“Jerk!”
“Bitch!”
Sam growled in frustration. “Dean, it’s Mom, not the queen of England.”
“Mom loves Christmas.” Dean glared at him.
“Be that as it may, Dean, I don’t think she’s going to care or notice if you missed putting tinsel on every square inch of the bunker. Although, she might get a kick out of tree topper Cas.” Sam smiled and waved his hand. “And she’ll love the North Pole look, and the fact that all we need to complete it is a mall Santa, and she’ll love the flannel shirts and the fluffy socks, and the case of salt. You know why?”
Dean frowned. “Why?”
“Because she’s ‘Mom.’ So you can stop all the…” Sam waved his hand again.
As if on cue, Mary entered the bunker, followed by Castiel, who had his hand full, carrying a bunch of gifts she had bought for her sons. “Merry Christmas, Boys!” she called out as she came down the stairs.
Dean’s face lit up at the sound of her voice. The argument with Sam forgotten, he rushed over to meet her at the bottom of the stairs. Dean wrapped his arms around his mother in a big bear hug. “Merry Christmas, Mom!”
Sam watched as their mother hugged Dean back. He felt a mix of sadness and jealousy that he had no strong feeling for his mother like his brother. To him, she was just another hunter, a stranger in a lifetime full of people coming and going. It hurt too, that he was probably the same to her. He was about to help Castiel put the presents under the tree when his mother looked over at him.
“Merry Christmas, Sam,” Mary said as she came over to him. She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him just as tightly as she did with Dean. Stepping back, she said, “I’m-”
“It’s okay, Mom, and Merry Christmas to you too.” Sam smiled and the awkwardness vanished when Mary smiled back at him. She reached up and ruffled his hair and he chuckled. As far as Sam was concerned, that little bit of motherly affection was the best present ever. It even made putting up with Dean’s holiday madness worth the trouble.
