“That was fun! Thanks, Gil,” Elizabeta Héderváry said as they left the bowling alley. She held her date Gilbert Beilschmidt’s hand and instead of heading into the parking lot for his motorcycle, they walked. When he first asked her out, Elizabeta did not think she would have a good time, given his reputation, but she did.
Gilbert smiled as the color rose in his pale cheeks. “You’re welcome,” he said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. “You wanna come over my house? Or we could go to the malt shop or something…”
“Okay.”
He lived in a modest home a few blocks from the gas station his father owned. It was not a far walk from where they were now, although Gilbert wished it was farther. He liked holding Elizabeta’s hand as they walked along and he was still amazed that a pretty girl like her would even go out with him. All too soon, they were strolling up the path to his house.
Gilbert opened the front door and let them in. “Hey, Lutz, I’m back!” he called out to his little brother. “Lutz? Feli? Anyone home? Ummm, wait here, Lizzie.”
Elizabeta followed him in. “Okay.” She looked around as she stood there; waiting to see what her date wanted to do. She liked how small and cozy it was. She was also surprised at how neat it was, given that there were only men living there.
“Lutz isn’t here. I guess he must be at Feli’s which means we have the house to ourselves.” He grinned. “Wanna watch TV? Vati finally saved up enough to buy one.”
“Okay. Any idea of what’s on?”
“Nope.” Gilbert walked over to the television set in the living room, while Elizabeta sat down on the sofa. He switched it on and waited for the picture to come on. The station was showing a movie. “This okay?” he said as he played with the antenna.
“Yeah.”
Gilbert sat down on the sofa and Elizabeta scooted closer to him. So he put his arm up and around her shoulders. He liked the way she settled in, as if she had always been his girlfriend. He looked at her and smiled.
Elizabeta looked up at him and smiled back. Before she even realized what was happening, she was kissing Gilbert. It was an innocent little kiss that led to more and more of them. Given his reputation, Elizabeta was surprised at that. She figured he would have taken her to his room and they probably would have done it by now. That’s what that trampy Natasha Arlofskaya claimed anyway and with Gilbert’s bad boy reputation, she believed it like everyone else in school did. It did not help that all the girls that went out with him claimed he was fast. Yet, when he flashed that sweet dopey smile of his, Elizabeta found that hard to believe. It helped her relax and just go with things.
Gilbert broke the kiss and nuzzled her cheek. He gazed longingly at her. While he would have loved to have let nature take its course, he really had no idea how to bring that up. Besides, he was a Teutonic Knight and their code of honor meant you treated your girl like a lady, which meant you squashed your desires and took care of things later on by yourself in the privacy of your room. Elizabeta was just so kissable in his humble opinion, and Gilbert leaned in and kissed her again.
They were so busy kissing, and by this time, Gilbert had worked up enough nerve to slip her a bit of tongue, that they never heard the front door open and Gilbert’s father come in. Wolfgang was tired from a long day at work and he hoped his boys had enough sense to start dinner. What he never expected was to find his eldest getting up to no good with Frank Héderváry’s daughter. “Gilbert Beilschmidt!!” he roared as he grabbed his son and pulled them apart. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” he said angrily in German as he hauled Gilbert to his feet.
“N-nothing, Vati! We’re just kissing?”
“With your brother upstairs?”
“I don’t know where Lutz is!”
Elizabeta had no idea what they were saying, but it could not have been good form the look on Gilbert’s father’s face and the tone of his voice. Gilbert looked like he was in big trouble too and she felt kind of sorry for him. That was when things took a bizarre turn and the next thing she knew Gilbert was apologizing to her for having his way with her and telling her, that his father was driving her home. “Why?”
“I’ll explain later, when I see you in school,” he said softly.
“Okay.” Elizabeta stood up. “I’m sorry; we upset you, Mr. Beilschmidt.”
Wolfgang nodded coolly. He was too angry at his son to speak. He glared at Gilbert there would be time enough to knock some sense into his thick skull when they got home. Without a word, he turned and walked out of his house. Getting back into his car, he started it and waited.
Gilbert was visibly shaken and Elizabeta’s heart went out to him. He didn’t say much to her as they left his house, other than he was really sorry, liked her a lot, and to please not hate him. He held the door for her as she got into it. They drove in stony silence and Elizabeta did not whether to be hurt or angry when Gilbert refused to hold her hand. When they stopped in front of her house, she noticed his father came with them.
“Uh, Lizzie, can you ask your father to come here?”
“Why?”
“Just please ask him.”
“Okay.” Elizabeta walked up to the front door, opened it, and called inside. “Daddy? Can you come here for a minute?”
Frank Héderváry got up to see was wrong. “Kitten?” he said when he saw her boyfriend and his father.
Wolfgang shoved Gilbert forward.
“Uh, Mr. H.”
“Yes?”
“I want to apologize for taking advantage of your daughter. I’m sorry, she’s a nice girl and all and ummm… I’m sorry. You too, Lizzie. I’m sorry.”
Elizabeta nodded. “It’s okay, Gil, you didn’t do anything wrong.” She looked over at her father. From the look on his face, Elizabeta had the feeling she was about to get grounded.
Wolfgang nodded. “If you’ll excuse us.”
“Sure. Come, Kitten.” Frank went back inside with his daughter without seeing them off. “You have some explaining to do, Missy.”
“Daddy, we weren’t doing anything except kissing on the sofa while watching TV. Honestly! Gilbert’s a nice boy and he wouldn’t do anything bad.”
Frank was not sure if he believed her, but Elizabeta was a good kid, so he pushed his lingering doubts aside. What helped was he had the feeling that Gilbert boy was not going to be asking her out again anytime soon. “Go to your room, young lady. And I don’t want you dating that Gilbert boy anymore, understood?”
Elizabeta sighed. “Yes, Daddy.” She turned and headed upstairs to her room. She wanted to call Gilbert and find out if he was alright, but she did not want either of her parents catching her talking to him on the phone. She would just have to explain things to him on Monday when she saw him at school. She hoped he would understand that she was not breaking up with him because she did not like him, but because her father said she could not date him anymore. Sighing softly, she lay on her bed, the tears welling up in her eyes. She cried softly, hating the way things turned out as she was beginning to like Gilbert a lot and now it was over.
