Gilbert and Ludwig entered the pet store for their monthly dog food run. With three dogs, and two of them big, two huge bags of kibble and a couple of cases of canned food really didn’t go as far as they would have liked. But the brothers would not trade their canine companions for the world, or Gilbert’s little canary. They just wished the dogs ate more like the bird. Since that was not happening any time soon, they just carefully managed their budget to cover their pets’ expenses.

Grabbing a shopping cart, they headed towards the back of the store where the dog food was kept. On the way, they tossed in a few toys, a new dog bed for Aster, and some birdseed for Gilbird. Nearing the accessories, Gilbert chuckled at the dog collars. One crazy afternoon when Blackie was still a puppy, he and his best friends, Francis and Tony, came in here and tried them on. Gilbert still had the pink collar with the rhinestones on it that he bought back then. He still wore it too, whenever he went out clubbing with his friends.

“Hey, West, should we get Berlitz a new collar?”

Ludwig looked over at his brother, who was pushing the cart, and gave his head a little shake. “You’re not happy unless she bites you again, are you?” he said dryly.

Gilbert rolled his eyes. Ignoring his brother’s comment, he said, “I think she’d look cute in this one.” He took a red leather one off the rack. “What do you think?”

“I think she’d look better in this one.” Ludwig grabbed a blue woven one.

“If you say so.” Gilbert took it from him and tossed it in the cart. “Blackie need one?”

“No and neither does Aster.” Ludwig continued walking. He rounded a corner and straight ahead was a row of kennels with puppies in them. He paused and Gilbert, who was behind him, nearly hit him with the shopping cart.

“West!” Gilbert peered around his brother’s taller, bulkier form. “Puppies!” he said like an excited little kid. He pushed the cart around his brother, clipping his heel in the process.

“Hey!” Ludwig followed his brother at a more sedate pace, drawn to the puppies as well. He put his finger against the glass separating him from a miniature dachshund. His normally stern features softened into a smile when the puppy looked up and yawned.

“Aren’t they cute?” Gilbert said from where he had squatted down to watch a couple of German Shepherd puppies play.

“Yeah…”

Gilbert stood up. “Hello! Who do we have here?” he said to the girl, who was bringing a fluffy little bundle of brown and white back to the kennels. “Can I hold him?”

The girl nodded. “I need you to fill out some paperwork first, and then go wash your hands.”

“Hey, West?”

Ludwig sighed. “I’ll fill out the paperwork.”

“Okay,” the girl said as Gilbert hurried over to the bottle of hand sanitizer.

A few minutes later, both brothers were sitting on the floor of a puppy room, playing with the puppy that they found out was a shih tzu. Cute and cuddly, the puppy played happily with the two of them. Gilbert tossed the toy they had given them with the puppy and she bounded after it. Ludwig chuckled. He was falling in love with her, despite the fact that they had three dogs at home. He noticed Gilbert seemed pretty smitten with her too, if the look on his face was anything to go by.

“It’s time to give her back, Bruder.” Ludwig looked at his watch. He was amazed to see nearly a half hour had gone by.

“Can’t we get her?” Gilbert looked up at his brother. “Hey, where’d you go, Schatzi?” He reached around behind himself for the puppy.

“Schatzi?”

“Yeah.”

Ludwig rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Anyway, we have to give her back and go.”

“But I’m not done playing with her.” To the puppy he added, “Come back here! And give me back my wallet!” Gilbert turned and lay down on his stomach. He held out a hand to the puppy and wiggled his fingers.

The puppy shook her head and growled. She wanted whatever it was she had found behind the big black and white one. It may not have been tasty, but it was fun to chew on.

“Here, Schatzi!” Gilbert called. “Come on, girl!”

The puppy ignored him.

“Stop playing with the puppy and let’s go, Gilbert.”

“Not until she gives me back my wallet, West.”

“Who told you to give it to her?” Ludwig folded his arms across his chest.

“No one, it must have fallen out when I was playing with her.”

The puppy shook her head again. She growled trying to kill this prey that the big black and white one wanted.

Ludwig heaved a long suffering sigh. He crouched down on the floor and called the puppy. “Here, Schatzi.” He made kissy noise at her.

Gilbert snorted in amusement and his brother glared at him.

“Drop it!” Ludwig said in a firm voice.

The puppy tilted her head. She liked his deep voice, but had no idea what the big one wanted. She growled, before going back to playing with the wallet.

At that moment, the girl, who worked there, knocked on the door. It was enough to draw the puppy’s attention and she dropped the wallet. “Everything okay?” The girl opened the door.

“Yes!” both brothers cried as Gilbert retrieved his wallet. Scooping up the puppy, Ludwig handed her back. “Thank you,” he said as they left the puppy room. “Let’s go pay for this.”

“Okay. Can we get some more dog biscuits?”

“No.”

After paying for everything, they left the store and loaded their car. Getting in, they headed home. There, they unloaded the car. While Gilbert played with the dogs, Ludwig put everything away.

“Hey, West, wanna go to the shelter and adopt another one?”

“Yeah…”

“Awesomeness!”
