Well, I'm not sure if I can make seven, and this will probably be very stereotypical of a teenage girl, but I'll try my best!
1.) Concordia Language Villages (CLV)
I love this place to death! CLV is a brilliant brainchild of Concordia College, that is essentially an immersion experience for anyone, ages 1 - 99. The signature program is the summer villages, however, which is an immersion camp for kids; you can either attend as a normal summer camper that happens to be going to a camp in a foreign language, or you can go for the high school credit course, in which upon summer camp activities, you have classes, projects, and learn a thousand times more in only double the time of the other campers. And it's not just the immersion experience I love; it's the people. Somehow, CLV attracts the nicest, most wonderful people in the world, and no one ever really wants to leave at the end. It's a giant family, and my second real home.
2.) The Internet
Do I really need to explain? I mean, the internet is world-wide, and therefore, I can talk to native Japanese when no native Japanese people (that I know of) live anywhere in my town. I can read up on what a random actor is doing in Hokkaidou on that very day, or send mail across the world in ten seconds flat. Or a second, if I use IM.
3.) Word Processors
As an indecisive writer, this is very important to me. I edit and reedit so many times that if I wrote in a notebook, or, heaven forbid, a typewriter, my stories would be completely illegible. Thus, I'm indescribably grateful for any wordprocessor in which I can backspace, delete, and rewrite, without any evidence!
4.) Tofu
Protein - but without fat? Oh, who wouldn't call that the food of the gods? I love this stuff to death; I mean, it is the ultimate shapeshifter, taking on the taste of anything you put it in, and it is healthy, delicious, and heavensent for all vegetarians who might . . . just maybe . . . be missing meat. (The horror!) I'll take tofu anyday.
5.) Johnny's Entertainment
I don't think many people will agree with me, but . . . ♥ They have great music, great music videos (I ADORE their dancing), and above all, very cute boys. I mean, a Johnny's video will never fail to make feel better when I'm feeling down or angry about something. That has to count for something, doesn't it?
6.) Great Teachers
I don't know know how much this actually counts as "modern world", but I feel that it applies; with respect becoming looser in today's times, I feel students can become closer friends with their teachers. And without that ability, I would never have enjoyed English class or History nearly as much as I did last year. I would have failed Spanish class for mixing up Japanese and Spanish, and 森の池 wouldn't be my real home. I love my teachers more than I do my own family, in some cases. >.>
7.) Civil Rights
I just can't help but be amazed by how much people can make a difference when they put their minds to it. In the United States, countless minorities have fought - and won - their rights, and that gives me hope that I can make a difference when I fight for GLBT rights. ☆
