Supernatural Theories Ahead

Apr 11, 2006 20:39

I don't do theories much, that is, I don't type them up and post them -- most are kept to myself or discussed with friends. However, I needed to work these out and wanted to use the tags to organize thoughts for my next spec script.

These are based off the copy of the pilot of "Supernatural" I received today. The entire file's a scan of an original copy, so I can't re-post however, I typed in the relevant part.

INT. HOUSE - NURSERY - NIGHT

Mary BURSTS into the nursery, flips the light switch. No light comes on. She steps forward. And whatever she sees O.S., It causes her color to drain. Her breath comes in short, panicked bursts. And on her face...a glimmer of recognition --

MARY
(a whisper)
...what are you doing here...get away from him...

Allow me a moment to relate my feelings when I first read through the script -- recognition?

It was basically that. I believe all thought processes halted at that moment.

Keep in mind, this is the script, and things could have been changed last-minute. But there has to be something to that, because it came from somewhere, and relates somehow. Or perhaps it doesn't. Either way, I've been theorizing all afternoon and as I'm working on a spec, feel it's best to write everything down before I forget.

And, well, tags are a wonderful organization tool.

In my mind, there are two possibilities:

Either Mary knew the demon personally, ie, it was someone from her life before John.

or

Mary knew said demon/person through John.

We know John never saw said person/demon, and thus, can't confirm nor deny either claim. However, something about the person frightened Mary so much, as to cause her to pale and start panicking. Someone she'd encountered in the past?

From John's journal, we can assume Mary had some abilities -- also, psychic abilities are passed through families, so Sam's had to come from somewhere. Therefore, her knowing someone with supernatural powers isn't completely out of the realm of possibilities. Then again, what kind of person would kill her?

A vendetta? Revenge? Just plain homicidal rage? It does explain a connection between Mary and Jess, which does support the second theory, that it was someone known through John.

That would explain why Mary was killed, and then, perhaps Jess. The best thing that comes out of either idea is that neither death was Sam's fault.

I've seen it so many times in fanfics and such, Sam feeling all guilty about both women dying over his bed. And I can see the possibility, though no one else in the show has really said anything. Looking at that small bit of the script above, we can be sure this isn't something going after Sam, per se, but the women connected to the Winchester men, in general. Therefore, it can't be Sam's fault; he can't be the cause.

The cause isn't clear. The catalyst still hasn't been revealed. But we do know it was someone known to the family in some way. There was recognition there. Now, just have to figure out the past family mythos behind both Mary and John.

I've already given her a sister and brother-in-law, why not more family members?

On a lighter note, Dean calls Sam, "Sammy," throughout the script, only stopping near the end (and at a few places). I can count the "Sam"'s on one hand.
