Totsuka opens his eyes when he hears the door to his changing room open and close. He isn’t sharing it with anyone this time around. A quick glance at the clock told him that there is not too much time left until the start of the show so everyone must be busy getting ready. Nobody would come in at this time. Besides, his co-stars usually knocked, as did everyone else, for that matter. Everyone but…
“I know sneaking up on you never works but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep trying,” a quiet voice remarks and somebody walks over to where Totsuka remained seated in front of his make-up mirror. He smiles and looks at the other person’s reflection in the mirror. “Hello there, zachou.” A paper bag is lifted up and placed on his shoulder playfully. “I brought something.”
He recognizes the name on the bag and smiles. It’s one of his favorite places.
“You’re not going to give this to everyone?” he asks. “You have no manners.” Totsuka teases.
“They got their share, this one’s just for you,” the other person replies and puts the bag onto the table in front of Totsuka. “Personal present and not a courtesy present. I know my manners, thank you.” That is followed by a soft huff and Totsuka tries hard not to smile in amusement too obviously - although the other can probably tell he is.
Humming in acknowledgement, Totsuka starts to get ready for the show. “I didn’t hear from management that you were going to come today. And you’re alone, too. That’s rare.”
“Tomorrow’s a break-day, isn’t it? How about we ride our old train all the way out and go for a walk?” the other ignores his comments and yet he doesn’t. Totsuka smiles when he realizes that the other has things all planned out already. “That is, if you’re free. But you should be.”
“How’d you know?” Totsuka asks. Of course he is but he can’t resist playing along a bit.
Chuckling, the other replies, “I asked Fumito for your schedule. I got your private schedule as a bonus, too. You should change your phone lock. Hasshi’s been playing with it.”
“Has he know,” Totsuka chuckles and makes a mental note to change the number combination again sometime soon. “Aren’t my group-mates helpful now. I guess I’m free tomorrow then. Although I need to warn you that Nishiki-san asked us out tonight.”
“I know. He asked me to come along already when I met him earlier,” the other replies with a grin. “So no problem there. If things run way too late, you are more than welcome to stay over at my place. Or I’ll come over to yours. I leave that decision up to you.”
Raising an eyebrow, Totsuka comments, “This seems to be going way too smoothly.”
“I am thorough when it comes to these things. You know that,” when the 10 minutes warning echoes through the hallway outside, the other wraps his arms around Totsuka from behind briefly and blows a fleeting kiss against the back of his neck, “I’ll be watching you from the audience. See you later.” It was time for him to leave, for now.
Before the other can move out of his reach, Totsuka turns around and grabs hold of the other’s arm. He pulls the other down and presses their lips together for a brief moment before he lets go again. “Thank you for coming, Mitsu.”
Kitayama smiles at him, “You knew I would have come no matter what.”
“Cheesy,” Totsuka laughs and straightens up. “Well then, off you go. Stir up the audience with your grand entrance, make them buzz like little excited bees, make twitter explode and get comfortable on your seat.”
“Your choice of words and imagery,” Kitayama laughs, or chuckles rather. It’s that deep, amused chuckle that sends little chills down Totsuka’s spine and not the higher pitched, slightly nasal laugh that most people associate with the other. Kitayama leaves Totsuka’s changing room with a last lazy wave of his hand.
Turning back towards the mirror, Totsuka takes a deep breath and switches back into working mode. He always gives his best but there’s additional pressure on him today.
Usually one would think that it’s okay to mess up in front of someone who understands but it’s not the case. Especially in front of people who know and understand, he wants to show nothing but his very best. Everyone else was forgiving - so he needed to be strict with himself.
“Alright, let’s do this,” Totsuka whispered to himself and put on the final piece of his costume.
He only catches a brief glance of Kitayama during intermission, too busy getting ready for the next act. It’s not until two hours later that he sits in a car with the other, showered and hungry.
Kitayama is telling him about his impressions of the play, while they wait for traffic to move.
Totsuka smiles when Kitayama talks about the play as a whole, talks about the story, the other actors and everything. The other doesn’t just narrow it down to Totsuka, doesn’t just tell Totsuka that ‘you were great’ but gives an honest opinion. The other knows he wouldn’t have it any other way, that he would complain otherwise.
They reach the restaurant a little later than planned but that way they do not have to wait for food and drinks, everything is already waiting for them as they join the rest of the cast and crew at the table. Nishikiyori-san pats them both on the back and makes them sit down.
Or at least makes Kitayama sit down. He tells Totsuka to make the toast for tonight first.
Said and done, Totsuka does as he is told but then gets laughed at for being too serious but that it’s ‘just like him’ and that’s okay as it is.
He smiles and sits down and dinner proceeds smoothly. There’s small talk over food and drinks and things end at a reasonable time, considering how everyone wants to make the most out of their day off the next day and not just spend it sleeping at home.
Totsuka ends up at Kitayama’s apartment and after another, longer shower to get rid of the smell of food and whatnot, sits on the other’s IKEA bed to wait for Kitayama to finish his shower as well. The other does not make him wait for too long and flops down on the bed next to him just a few minutes later.
“You could have gone ahead?” Kitayama asks. “No need to wait for me.”
“I wanted to,” Totsuka replies and makes the other face him. “We don’t get to see each other that often anymore, so I want to make the most of the time we can spend together.”
Laughing softly, the other settles into a more comfortable position, looking back at Totsuka with a gentle gaze. “Guess we can sleep during the train ride tomorrow?”
“I should be offended you’re not getting a car to drive me out for our date,” Totsuka doesn’t mean that of course. “What if we’re discovered and bothered all the way? I’ll be riding the train with Kisumai’s Kitayama Hiromitsu after all.”
“There’s a reason for taking the train and you know that,” Kitayama snorts softly. “For your information, I seem to have awesome powers of invisibility on trains apparently. I’m not Tama or Fujigaya. Nobody notices me. So we’ll be fine. Unless of course people get all excited about ABC-Z’s Totsuka Shota riding the train with...some random guy.”
It’s Totsuka’s turn to snort softly in amusement and he leans forward to rest his forehead against the other’s. “I guess we’ll be fine then.” He decides that they have done enough talking for now and closes the small gap that is left between their lips.
A pleasant shiver runs down his spine when he kisses the other. Kitayama’s lips are pliant and feel warm and soft against his own.
He feels how the other’s hand moves up to threat itself into Totsuka’s hair gently, pulling him closer and then keeping him in place. Totsuka rests his own hands on the other’s hip and thigh and relaxes, closing his eyes as he does to enjoy.
Kissing is all they do tonight - everything else would have required more energy than Totsuka has left for one and two, would have been stupid considering they wanted to be out and about the next day - walking and doing whatever else they felt like, outside. It’s okay though. They can both live with just this. The kisses are chaste and not frustrating at all. There is no promise of more in them, no promise that cannot be fulfilled right now. They aren’t kisses meant to rile each other up only to be left hanging in the end. They’re just right.
Of course doing more is nice, too but neither him nor Kitayama need it all the time, not anymore. That phase of their relationship, their lives really, is over now.
The thought makes him chuckle softly and Kitayama raises an eyebrow inquiringly.
“I was just thinking about how we’ve grown up...become adults,” Totsuka said.
“Have we really?” Kitayama asks and laughs as well. “Maybe we have. At least a bit.”
After another kiss or two, Kitayama decides that it’s time for bed and crawls under the thin covers. It’s getting hot in Tokyo but well, that’s what fans and air-conditioners were for and Totsuka was glad because that meant they could still share the bed without feeling gross and too hot doing so. He likes to watch Kitayama fall asleep next to him. The speed with which the other’s breathing evens out and his features relax always fascinated him.
He has always been the slower one to fall asleep, so it’s a familiar sight to Totsuka.
It’s that familiar sight, coupled with his exhaustion from doing two shows in a day, that makes him drift off into a comfortable sleep as well.
When it only takes one alarm the next morning to wake Kitayama up again, he can’t help but make comment about it, only for Kitayama to retort, “You were the one thinking about how we’ve grown up last night.” And he laughs softly.
“I know, I know.”
They get ready and then head out to eat breakfast at a place Kitayama recommends - the other is a walking restaurant guide, it comes in handy a lot of times - before they head to the train station to get onto ‘their train’. Totsuka feels a small wave of nostalgia when he sits down next to the other and watches as more and more people get on as well.
“I’ve never been on it this early in the morning when it’s bound for the opposite direction,” he muses quietly to himself. Back in the days, he and Kitayama had gotten onto the train in order to get to the city and not to leave it as they were right now.
“Weird, isn’t it?” Kitayama agrees softly.
The people and the scenery had changed as well, Totsuka notices when the train pulls out of the station and makes its way towards their destination and yet. Everything seems very different than it used to be and yet it doesn’t feel different.
It doesn’t feel different because the person sitting on the train next to him, fast asleep already of course, is still the same. And yet he is not. He couldn’t say that Kitayama hadn’t changed. Totsuka could also not say that he hadn’t changed as well. They were different people now.
Everything and everyone had changed really and yet maybe that is exactly why things don’t feel different and out of place to him at all.
The familiar weight of Kitayama’s head dropping down against his shoulder makes Totsuka feel sleepy as well and he gives in to that sleepiness soon, resting his head against the other’s. For a moment, he think that his eyes catch a pair that looks just like them on the train passing them in the opposite direction and smiles.
His lips curl up further when his mind comes up with the lines: Then and now, there and back again, a story of Totsuka Shota...and Kitayama Hiromitsu.
