Summary: It's called the 'gift' or 'soul' by most. A strange, mysterious force only few possess on the planet that is half ocean and half desert. The people on the planet have lived in harmony with each other and their environment for centuries but something yet unknown is threatening to throw everything into chaos.

The rebuilding of the ghayi was taking shape and with each passing day, more and more of the rubble and destruction disappeared from view.

Sakuma was walking through the restored library. He’d been helping with the new shelves these days and was now putting books back onto them. Of course that only worked up to a certain point - or well, height.

“Need help?” somebody took the book from his hands and reached up to put it onto the top shelf for him. “Any more?”

Looking up, Sakuma huffed, “You came to find me here just to do this, didn’t you?” His lack of height was, after all, one of the favorite topics of conversation and jokes among the Snow Man Guard. “Also, shouldn’t you still be resting?”

“I am fine again and you make teasing you a little too easy sometimes, you know?” Iwamoto put more books up.

For a few moments, Sakuma watched the other before he averted his gaze and looked at the wall not too far away from them instead. This was where they had been that night. This wall had been the one they had been flung against.

“Don’t think about it anymore. It’s not like you to do something like that. You’re our Mister Positive after all,” Iwamoto smiled.

Laughing softly, Sakuma replied, “Somebody has to counterbalance Sanada after all.” Their friend wasn’t exactly known for being particularly positive or optimistic about things.

“That’s true. Anyway, was that it?” Iwamoto put the last few books onto the shelf.

“Yeah,” Sakuma nodded. “Thank you, Hikaru.”

“No problem. You’re welcome.”

Iwamoto looked at the other and then hugged Sakuma from behind and they let their souls interlace for a brief moment in silence.

Nikaido and Senga found Miyadate and Watanabe in the shadow of the columns in the garden and pulled them aside to talk. Out of most inhabitants of the ghayi, the two members of the Snow Man Guard probably shared the most similar soul-bond to the one that Nikaido and Senga had. The four of them got along well and often turned to each other for advice or just company at times, when they weren’t with their own little group.

The Snow Man Guard was also usually a very reliable source of information when it came to the doings and happenings around the ghayi. And that was precisely what Nikaido and Senga were looking for.

“We heard you two were out cold after the attack. What exactly happened?” Nikaido asked.

“Mh’Iida only explained what happened afterwards, well, naturally. The basic gist of it is that when those crystals explode, the soul trapped inside is thrown out of it and it then latches onto the next body - or vessel - available. Since well, our own soul already occupies our body and two in one doesn’t really work, the two fight for dominance. And that’s why the body shuts down. It temporarily gets separated from its soul after all,” Watanabe told the other two.

He continued, “In our case, I got hit and I hear so was Hayashi. Since Date is my soulmate, we got dragged into the mess as well and we fought the intruding soul together.”

Miyadate nodded, “The worst thing is that most of the souls don’t really want to do any harm but this was what that crazy guy made them do. Of course there were exceptions, too, we were told. They fought for control over the body in all earnest. They wanted to live even if it wasn’t in their own body anymore.”

Nikaido made a face and Senga just looked sad.

“The soul that hit Shota was a little girl’s. She was afraid of what was going to happen. It took a while to calm her down and then set her soul free. We wouldn’t have figured this out so easily without Mh’Iida’s help though. He found her in the inner chaos. You’d think finding a foreign soul in your body would be easy but it really wasn’t,” Miyadate sighed.

Watanabe drew up his legs a bit, “The worst thing at first was that Date was suddenly gone. The other soul was overpowering the bond and shutting me off.” He looked at the older two. “It was scary. To suddenly be unable to feel him after having been bonded for so long.”

“Abe told me you carried Watanabe down before you collapsed as well. Is that why? You couldn’t connect to Watanabe immediately but then when the bond clicked you were drawn in as well?” Senga deducted.

Miyadate nodded, “That seems to have been the case. Once I was inside though, there was no way out again. Not until Mh’Iida found us.”

“We’re going to have him and Master Ma’yaa teach us more about the inner workings of our souls. We realized how little we actually know about our inner selves after this. I didn’t know what a mess I was inside!” Watanabe laughed a bit to alleviate the tense mood a little bit.

Nikaido and Senga shared a look and then smiled as well. They knew the topic was closed then and decided to change to a different one.

They talked to the other pair until after sunset and thus dinner time. Afterwards Senga had helped to clean up. He had expected Nikaido to stick around but when he came out from the kitchen again the other was nowhere to be seen. So he went to look for him.

Senga found Nikaido in one of the rooms overlooking the garden. The other was never in one of the towers, too afraid of heights, despite being able to ‘fly’ when using the soul-path. He didn’t laugh at that fact, considering he was very much feeling the same.

“Nika?” he asked softly.

Turning around when his name was called, Nikaido looked at Senga. He was hidden by the shadows but Senga could still tell that the other’s expression was gentle.

“You couldn’t sleep again?” Senga walked over to join his partner and took Nikaido’s hand. Squeezing it gently he bumped shoulders with the other. “I could feel your distress but you’re keeping the reason for it from me.”

Sighing and closing his eyes, Nikaido’s voice was unusually quiet when he spoke, “I keep remembering. I keep hearing your screams in my dreams and I keep feeling the pain. It’s okay during the day when other things, other thoughts keep me busy but at night I can no longer avoid it. I’m sorry for worrying you. This will go away with time, I’m sure. Right now, it’s just still way too fresh for me to brush aside.”

“Nika,” Senga was at a loss of what else to say or do. It might seem illogical to other people that he, who had been the one suffering directly, was having so much less trouble when dealing with what had happened than Nikaido, who had been suffering indirectly. He understood the other, though. Senga knew that if their positions had been reversed, he would be feeling the same. Senga knew that Nikaido’s feelings and suffering were made worse by the helplessness the other had felt in that situation. Watching your beloved, your soul-mate suffer, hearing it, even feeling it and being unable to do anything. He couldn’t imagine a lot of things that were worse than that.

He let out a soft sound of surprise when the other tugged on his hand and pulled him into a hug. “Although I have come this far, risen up the ranks to this level, I still have a long way to go. I promise I’ll become someone who’s able to protect you no matter what.”

“Don’t become too perfect, though,” Senga gave the other a smile. “I like you the best when you have flaws,” he cupped Nikaido’s face with both of his hands. “I’ll watch your back. I’ll complete you.” Senga didn’t let the other say anything else and fused their lips together in a kiss. They melted against each other, into each other effortlessly, naturally.

The two of them sink down onto the floor and Senga pushed one of Nikaido’s hands under his garments. “Complete me, Nika,” he whispered softly.
