Summary: It's called the 'gift' or 'soul' by most. A strange, mysterious force only few possess on the planet that is half ocean and half desert. The people on the planet have lived in harmony with each other and their environment for centuries but something yet unknown is threatening to throw everything into chaos.

Yamamoto Ryota had been born into a merchant family living in one of the smaller oases along a major trading route in the desert.

He grew up normally but sometimes he seemed a little different than other children. Sometimes, when he played outside with his friends, he would hear a voice that the others didn’t or see movement where for the others, there was none.

One day, he kept looking at the horizon from his family home’s window. “A storm is coming. We should stay inside and close the doors,” he told his family as he turned around.

While his father had looked skeptical, his mother said they would do it. They took in their things from outside and shuttered the windows. Not soon after everyone had come back inside, the sky suddenly grew dark. Now their neighbors were also scrambling to get inside.

The oasis was hit by the worst sandstorm in years that day. The Yamamoto family was one of the few families who made it through with little to no damage.

That night, Yamamoto’s mother had come into his room and told him, “You’re special, Ryota. You have been blessed with a gift. You saved your family today.” Yamamoto had smiled at his mother and fallen asleep peacefully.

Whatever gift that he possessed didn’t seem to be very reliable though for he got caught in the next storm before he could make it home. He might not have made it at all if it hadn’t been for a man who had appeared in front of him all of a sudden.

The other’s movements had had caught his attention - the man had been dancing. And Yamamoto had never seen anyone dance quite like that. It wasn’t just dancing. There was more to it than the eye could see. Yamamoto had felt it. And then he had seen it. A large, serpent-like shape had wrapped itself around the man. And then around Yamamoto.

It protected them from the storm, like a glowing bubble, a safety-shield similar to the ones of the traveling cities. Just a lot more transparent and somehow alive. Yamamoto was stunned by the sight, so stunned that he hadn’t noticed how the man had moved closer to him, ultimately grabbing his hand and pulling him behind a house and into an alley. They were shielded from the storm there and waited it out as the snake disappeared. The storm didn’t last for long, it had been short but not less violent.

“Who are you?” Yamamoto had taken a while to find his voice.

The man smiled, “You can call me Yara. What is your name, young one?” And then he added, “I was looking for you.” The smile turned mysterious.

Blinking, Yamamoto had replied, “I’m Yamamoto Ryota. Why were you looking for me?”

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re special?” Yara asked him.

Yamamoto nodded, “My mother said I had a gift.”

“She’s right,” Yara nodded. “You do. And that’s why I was looking for you, Ryota. Where do you live? I need to talk to your family about a few things.”

Usually Yamamoto wouldn’t have been so trusting when it came to strangers but with Yara it was different. He could feel some kind of connection to the other. It was the same feeling he had had before the big storm and the times when he had played outside and heard and seen things others hadn’t. And when he had seen the snake the other had called forth earlier.

Those feelings also helped him to leave his family and go with Yara a couple of days later. The other had provided him with a few things for their trip during that time, most importantly knowledge. It had been in the form of tales, about the traveling cities and about the capital. That was where the other was going to take him: Dréd-Son, the capital of the planet.

Yamamoto had heard other merchants and travelers talk about it but those tales had sounded too exaggerated, they had been meant to amaze children. Yara’s tales on the other hand sounded mystic and no less fantastic and crazy but yet believable. After all, they were true. He could tell from the way the other talked about things.

He said his goodbyes to his family and then Yamamoto followed Yara onto a merchant vessel bound for a bigger oasis. From there, they would get onto a traveling city that was on its way to the capital.

That had been years ago. Now, Yamamoto had been Yara’s disciple and student for a while, had found out and learned more about himself and his gift.

A lot of things had happened ever since that day. And their relationship had started to change as well. While Yara had been his master, mentor and also a friend at first, the other had become so much more to Yamamoto.

At first he had thought that the feelings he had for the other were like the love he had for his family but after seeing his family again, or at least his parents when they had come to visit the capital, he had realized that the feelings were different.

He realized that he had fallen in love with his master. Yamamoto hadn’t been able to place his feelings until he had talked to others about them, people he trusted and people who would know and understand. He had been thinking about things almost every day but then other things had happened and the thoughts had been pushed back for a while.

They would come back to haunt him though, keep him awake at night, follow him into his dreams - they would be with him every moment when he wasn’t too distracted.

After the attack on it, the ghayi was being rebuild. Yamamoto helped where he could, most of the time by taking care of those still recovering from their injuries.

Whenever he was free, he would stand by one of the windows and look towards the port.

Yara would be back. The other had promised him. And his master never broke a promise.

He had lost count of the days he had waited. It felt like a lot of time had passed and yet it had only been a handful of days, hours, stretched into what seemed like eternity. Then one night, his eyes flew open. Something had roused him from his slumber.

Putting on some light garments, he walked out into the courtyard only to witness the reunion of all four masters of the ghayi. But his eyes continued their path to the space behind them.

“Edacchi! Shota!” he couldn’t stop tears from welling up in his eyes. A part of him had continued to believe, to hope his friends were alive but another part of him hadn’t been quite as confident about it. So relief was flooding him now. He threw his arms around his two friends and hugged them as close as humanly possible.

“Careful there, you’re going to end up crushing one of us,” Hayashi laughed but hugged the other back tightly as well.

Of course there was a lot to talk about and to do. Not everyone had come back completely unscathed. Yamamoto watched how Yokoo helped Master Tsubasa carry an unconscious Kitayama inside to the makeshift sickbay and Master Ma’yaa had followed them.

Senga had looked visibly shaken as well when he had given Yamamoto a brief smile. He had not let go of Nikaido’s hand the whole time. The pair vanished inside very quickly. Everyone else settled in at some point and Yamamoto followed suit. At least for a while. He was too restless, too awake of course to go back to sleep. So he had gone back to his spot by the window and continued to wait.

It wasn’t until the early hours of morning that Yamamoto got to see the one he had been waiting for all this time. The sun was rising already, the rays dying his sable hair gold. Yamamoto averted his eyes from the sunrise when he felt a presence behind him.

“Master Yara,” he smiled at his mentor. “Welcome back.”

“I promised, didn’t I?” Yara smiled back and walked over to Yamamoto. The younger male felt how his heart was starting to race. His eyes fell onto the talisman he had given his master when they had parted ways in the desert city what now felt like years ago when it had merely been a couple of days at most.

Gathering his courage, Yamamoto looked up, “Master Ya-” He didn’t get to finish his sentence because a pair of lips on his own effectively silenced him, swallowed all of the words he had wanted to say.

Yamamoto’s eyes widened in surprise and he froze on the spot, not knowing what to do or how to react. Even when the other pulled away again.

“Ah...wah...I...” the kiss had apparently killed all coherent thoughts.

Apparently that amused Yara. His eyes showed gentleness though under the mirth.

“I have been wanting to do that for a while now.”

The words pulled Yamamoto out of his stupor and he stared at his master in disbelief. “You... I mean...Really?” he couldn’t completely comprehend it yet.

“Don’t think about it, Ryota. Just feel for now,” Yara murmured and then pulled Yamamoto in for another, longer kiss.

Heeding his master’s advice, Yamamoto stopped thinking altogether and let his body respond to the kiss instead. And when he did so, he could feel how happiness flooded his whole body, his whole being as a heavy weight was lifted from his shoulders.

At the back of his mind, he noticed how the soul-bond he and his master shared was changing, was getting deeper and even stronger than before.

To be continued...
