Summary: It's called the 'gift' or 'soul' by most. A strange, mysterious force only few possess on the planet that is half ocean and half desert. The people on the planet have lived in harmony with each other and their environment for centuries but something yet unknown is threatening to throw everything into chaos.

[Recap Chapter 37]

He looked at the crystal above their heads. Then Kitayama curled his fingers into a fist and channeled his energy into it. The barrier around them disappeared as he slammed his fist down onto the crystal Akut’ou had been using earlier, shattering it. The energy surge made it all the way up to the large crystal and in an explosion of green and red, it burst into dust.

Kitayama smiled, satisfied but the next moment he disappeared from Senga’s view, slammed into a wall not too far away. A shadow with a long sword loomed over him, ready to strike.

Akut’ou was fuming, “Kill him! Kill him!”

Having used up all his energy, Hiromitsu had no strength to defend himself anymore. He closed his eyes and waited for the end.

Master Yara punched the wall of the cage. Was there nothing they could do? Was there nothing he could do? The cage was more than just a force field. It was truly a cage. The energy of the crystal’s energy was solid and wouldn’t budge even to their normal weapons.

The shadowy creature raised its weapon and was ready to strike. Kitayama had his eyes closed, waiting for the blow, waiting for the end to come.

“Hiromitsu!”

Was this going to be the end? Even if Kitayama had destroyed part of that contraption, there was no telling whether the mad scientist didn’t have any backup. And even if he didn’t have any, he would most likely just get rid of them for knowing his secrets. They would be disposed of and rot away down in this cave and nobody would find them. They would never see their beloved ones ever again, the ones they had left behind.

No. This couldn’t be the end yet!

His movement shifted his garments and the bracelet Yamamoto had given him came into view. No, this couldn’t be the end. He had made a promise.

A promise that he absolutely had to keep.

The little talisman caught some of the weak light and for a second, Master Yara thought that it changed shape but when he looked again it was unchanged. Were his eyes playing tricks on him? Or was it his mind?

Suddenly, a low rumbling sound could be heard and the walls of whatever underground cave they were in shook ever so slightly. Nobody seemed to notice it - the shadowy creatures wouldn’t care and Akut’ou was too absorbed in watching what was happening to Kitayama.

Master Yara looked up at the ceiling. He was sure he hadn’t imagined that. Was a miracle about to happen?

Things happened very quickly then.

Multiple loud crashes could be heard and a group of pirates and outlaws appeared from some of the hallways. The sources of the sounds had been some of the vehicles they had used to maneuver through the caves - the same ones they used for raids in the desert.

Leading the group were two people Master Yara was more than familiar with.

He stared in disbelief. “You guys!”

While two flashes of light - or what seemed to be two flashes of light - moved to fend off the shadows, one of the pirates used a huge impulse hammer to destroy the cage Nikaido and Master Yara were still trapped in. While the crystals powering it couldn’t be reached from inside the cage, it seemed like they were easily accessible from the outside.

The long-haired pirate cleared away the shards and grinned.

“You sure taught your boys some good tricks, I have to admit,” he offered his hand to Master Yara and smiled. “It’s been a while, Yaracchi. I’m glad to see that you seem well. Although, you know, I had hoped for a nicer setting for the reunion.”

“Maachin,” Master Yara clasped the other’s hand. He smiled, “It’s good to see you.”

“Come on out, both of you,” Machida looked at Nikaido. “We’ll get you out of here. Yone’s securing the exits as we speak.”

“How did you find us?” Master Yara asked as he climbed out of the cage.

“A fierce desert cat found its way to us, I guess?” Machida chuckled and nodded his head towards where a pack of large, soul-beast felines was ripping through a group of shadow zombies. “Along with a few lost kittens.”

“Master Yara!” Takahashi ran towards his master. He was dressed in the clothes of the pirates and still sported a bandage around his head.

“He insisted on coming with us,” Machida explained. “The other two are back at the village with that friend of yours, Tsubasa he called himself. They’re fine, recovering nicely. That Hayashi kid, too. He did a good job hanging on to life. It took the combined effort of four of our most medically savvy people to get him back on track though.”

Master Yara pressed his forehead against Takahashi’s in greeted, and relief washed over him when he heard his old friend’s words. They were all safe. They were alive. A smile tugged on his lips. He would be able to keep his promise to Yamamoto after all.

There wasn’t a lot of time for greetings and reunions though. They were in the middle of a fight after all. Master Yara shouted a few commands, gave advice as to how to deal with the shadow creatures. Then his eyes roamed over to area, looking for a certain person.

“I’m not going to let you get away,” he hissed and then called forth his powers. His soul manifested in the form of a large, glowing silver snake.

Soul powers manifested themselves in animal form sometimes. It wasn’t unusual for the form to change though, depending on what the wielder wanted to call forward. For Master Yara, though, the snake was his most natural form. His soul’s snake had been his most loyal companion ever since he’d first called her forth. She gave him comfort, strength.

The snake slithered through the fighting crowd towards one of the tunnels and blocked it, stopping Akut’ou in his tracks. Master Yara walked over to the other, his snake withdrawing, disappearing.

Akut’ou turned to look at him, “Don’t think I am defenseless.”

“Oh, I know that perfectly well,” which was exactly why he had withdrawn his soul powers. “And I think I know something else about you as well.” He reached over his shoulders and pulled out a pair of twin-blades, which his four boys had affectionately dubbed the ‘snake fangs’. “You focused so much on soul powers and the like that you neglected real weapons. You lack a defense against hard steel.”

The shadowy creatures hadn’t even checked them for weapons. Yes, the cage had kept them from using anything, both physical and soul powered weapons but still. Akut’ou had been too sure of the powers of that crystal of his. And Master Yara was sure that the other still was. The other didn’t have anything else but crystal shards on him most likely.

“Nothing is indestructible and nobody is almighty,” Master Yara whispered and moved closer.

“You won’t be able to kill me. Your snake venom will be useless against me!” Akut’ou sounded close to being hysteric, his voice rising in pitch.

A small smirk tugged on Master Yara’s lips, “If the venom won’t kill you, the fangs will tear you apart. May your ‘soul’ rot away somewhere to atone for all the sins you committed.” He seriously hoped that the other’s soul would not become part of the ‘voice’. It would taint it.

He gripped the two blades in his hands. “Let me prove you wrong then, mister scientist.” His body moved effortlessly, swinging the blades and aiming for vital spots. Akut’ou wasn’t an easy prey though. Despite being almost unarmed - Master Yara avoided the small scale explosions the crystals cast at him caused - he managed to dodge most of Master Yara’s swipes and attacks.

They moved further and further into the tunnel, further into the darkness. Akut’ou was probably thinking that he would have an advantage here, his eyes being way more adjusted to the darkness than Master Yara’s were.

One of the explosions made Master Yara falter in his step and Akut’ou used his chance to move on but suddenly he found his way blocked by another figure.

“I seem to have impeccable timing today,” Master Takizawa looked at the man in front of him.

Akut’ou smiled, “Oh but you are not armed and you can hardly see, can you, Master Takizawa?” He was seeing his chance. He could get past this man.

“I am indeed unarmed, as I wasn’t expecting something like this,” Master Takizawa admitted. “But that doesn’t mean you will get past me alive.”

“Who says th-” Akut’ou’s words got stuck in his mouth and he looked down to see a blade sticking out of his chest. Eyes widened he turned around to find Master Yara there. “Attacking an unarmed man from behind? I thought you had more honor than that, Master Yara.”

Snorting softly, Master Yara turned his blade a little bit before he yanked it out, making blood splatter over the floor. “Honor? Who do you think I am?” He used his foot to kick Akut’ou’s body away from him in disgust. “And who would face the likes of you honorably?” He swung his blade to get rid of the blood before sheathing both again.

“You missed the party, Hide,” he smiled at Master Takizawa. “Although you do know when to make your late entrances, I guess.”

Chuckling, Master Takizawa commented, “I see why Yonehana and Machida call you the brat.” He was about to walk over to his friend and fellow master when something stopped him. A screeching noise filled the tunnel and then the voice multiplied.

Master Yara and Master Takizawa stared at Akut’ou’s body. A sick light emerged from it only to be torn apart by darkness and dozens of ‘hands of the dead’.

“The just punishment delivered by all the innocent souls he killed in his greed and hunger,” Master Takizawa muttered. “Eternally shattered, never to be reborn, never to become one with the voice, with life ever again.”

“He deserved that,” Master Yara spat and then looked towards the other end of the tunnel again. “Now, the party’s not quite over yet. Going to help with the clean-up at all, Hide?”

“I might as well, huh?” Master Takizawa followed Master Yara back into the cave where the shouts and sounds of fighting could still be heard.
