"joonmyunnie-hyung, play with me! let's make sandcastles together," five-year-old jongin said as he grabbed a hold of joonmyun's hand.
"okay~" joonmyun complied obediently as he let jongin pull him towards the sandpit in the playground. jongin happily bounced in his small strides with joonmyun in tow. he noticed a pair of eyes looking sharply in their direction and he smiled widely before sticking out his tongue at wufan. wufan literally huffed in irritation.
"joonmyun! you promised to play hide-and-seek with jongdae and the others!" wufan shouted from the see-saw. he let himself down before quickly scrambling to his feet. yixing, who was on the other end of the see-saw widened his eyes in horror when wufan suddenly stood up, causing yixing to fall on his butt with a loud thud.
jongin pouted when joonmyun stopped in his track. joonmyun blinked when wufan took his other hand, tugging him towards the other direction.
"come on, joonmyun," wufan cooed. "it won't be fun without you."
"alright," joonmyun said and he turned towards a sulking jongin. "jongin-ah, let's play together with wufan and the others. i promise next time we'll make many sandcastles to make it up for today."
"i don't want to play with wufan," jongin muttered, glaring at wufan. "he's mean."
"what?" wufan screeched and he glowered at the younger boy. "you've always wanted joonmyun for yourself. let him decide who he wants to play with."
"wufan," joonmyun called gently. "you're six; you should be kind to jongin because you're older than him," he said, matter-of-factly. joonmyun was quite proud of himself; he sounded like an adult.
"i'm kind to you," wufan said as he looked at the ground and swayed joonmyun's hand lightly.
"i know. but i want you to be kind to jongin too, alright? he's our cute, little brother. so do sehun and zitao," joonmyun smiled at wufan, causing jongin to pout in jealousy.
"okay," wufan murmured, his face flushed.
"hmph, i still don't wanna play with him," jongin said grumpily as he let go of joonmyun's hand. "let me make my own sandcastles by meself! i don't wanna friend joonmyun-hyung anymore!"
still pouting, jongin stalked off towards the sandpit and sulked. when yixing approached him, he quickly buried his head in his arms and started crying. yixing began to panic and he patted jongin's head gently, consoling the wailing boy as best as he could. he was six, after all. he needed to look after his younger brothers, yixing thought dreamily.
joonmyun bit his lips and his eyes began to well up. he felt guilty for making jongin cry. he was supposed to take care of jongin. what if jongin hated him? what if jongin wouldn't want to play with him anymore?
wufan felt a pang of remorse when he noticed that joonmyun's shoulders were shaking. joonmyun sniffled loudly, trying to hold back his tears. looking at wufan with wide, puppy eyes, joonmyun whined, "wufan~ what should i do? i made jonginnie cry!"
just then, a loud tinkling sound of a bell caught their attention. wufan quickly turned towards the direction of the sound, noting that the other kids were already running towards the edge of the playground.
"yay! ice-cream, ice-cream!" chanyeol cheered in happiness as he dragged little sehun towards the ice-cream man. kyungsoo screamed when sehun almost stumbled but that did not burst chanyeol's happy bubble. meanwhile, on the swings, zitao wiped his runny nose and stared insistently at baekhyun until the other sighed and followed the other kids. zitao grinned and made victory sign at minseok.
an idea struck wufan's little head.
"joonmyunnie, wait here, okay? i know what to do," wufan said. joonmyun watched as the other ran off to join the small crowd around their favorite ice-cream man.
a few minutes later, wufan came back with two strawberry-flavored ice-creams in his hands. catching his breath, he handed them to joonmyun.
"i think jongin likes strawberry ice-creams. i told donghae-hyung what happened so he gave an extra scoop and put extra sprinkles. let's go and give the ice-cream to him," wufan said, smiling brightly. joonmyun instantly beamed and nodded, wiping away his tears.
they approached jongin, who was sniffling and blowing his nose with the sleeve of his shirt. when he noticed their presence, he pretended not to look and nudged at yixing's feet.
"j-jonginnie, i-- i'm sorry," joonmyun said. "here! wufan bought us ice-creams! it's your favorite!"
jongin peeked at joonmyun, who was holding out an ice-cream. joonmyun smiled and jongin tentatively took the ice-cream from him.
"thank you," he murmured and nibbled at his lower lip, avoiding joonmyun's gaze.
"i'm sorry for making you sad," joonmyun said, voice trailing off. jongin's head perked up in alarm.
"no, joonmyun-hyung! it's not your fault," jongin exclaimed. "i should not sulk."
they both smiled at each other and from that moment, joonmyun knew that jongin was not angry at him anymore.
"i'm sorry, too," wufan said suddenly, extending his hand. "i promise i won't be so mean to you. so, friends?"
jongin grinned and shook wufan's hand. "okay! friends!"
"wufan, where's your ice-cream?" joonmyun asked, noticing that wufan's hands were empty.
"oh, i gave mine to yixing," wufan shrugged, pointing towards the said person as he shyly offered the strawberry ice-cream to luhan.
"it's okay. the three of us can share!" jongin exclaimed.
joonmyun and wufan beamed and the three of them huddled together to share the ice-cream.
they became the best of friends in no time. wufan and jongin would sometimes fight and argue to get joonmyun's attention but when they did, they would receive a good scolding from him. however, in the end, they would still share ice-creams and build sandcastles and play hide-and-seek together.
