Nomen est omen

Occupying a vessel brought forth some changes for an angel. Nerves and glands and simple cells made up a wonderfully complex body which was capable of feeling.

For an archangel - a weapon or a general of the angels, depending on the source - it was like a drug. Some enjoyed it and others swore to never do it again; Gabriel was one of the addicted ones. The power from the souls in Heaven was something to be used not enjoyed - regardless of Raphael’s thoughts. But. Humanity was to be savoured, especially as this was the Will of their Father. And Gabriel was a dutiful son. Never the most loved, never the most powerful, but always the one who carried out God’s Will.

He left Heaven to speak with Zachariah the Prophet, he left Heaven to speak to Mary and then he half a millennium later he spoke to Muhammad. He didn’t always bother to return to Heaven and nobody missed him; none of his brothers searched Earth for him and God always knew where were His firstborns. And Gabriel watched humanity and joined their ranks, partaking in their pains and pleasures and prayers before he had to once more carry out God’s Will.

The first time a human named him something he wasn’t it hurt. He was an extension of God’s Will; to be named something else changed him. But he learnt to enjoy the change, learnt to love humanity when he became something more than before.
In the end Gabriel was the Angel of Judgment; the Angel of Justice; the Angel of Hope, and still the Messenger. But Judgment, Justice and Hope met only at the rarest cases, leaving him frustrated and ill as he tried his best to provide all.

He found some beings who were born of human faith and feasted on human souls like the nameless dark things he had battled against. But these being called themselves gods and Gabriel felt himself intrigued even as he felt the Righteous Rage and need to bring Judgment and Justice to them. He told them to be careful because blasphemy begot death and Odin befriended him and tricked him and betrayed him and changed him into Loki. Part of Gabriel was amused by this but the bigger part of him (the Messenger and the part which remembered God’s burning presence) hated Odin for this. But being named changed him once more and Gabriel struggled to remain true to his Father even as Odin-All-Father swore them to be blood-brothers. Most of the stories about Loki trying to destroy the Asgards? True. And in the end he curbed their power, bringing North the Christians and leaving them only the stories but none of the believers.

But being free of them didn’t mean he could undo the changes they brought upon him. And God didn’t speak to him any longer - even though he listened and prayed and asked for forgiveness - and Gabriel missed Him like somebody misses a limb; being a cripple with a phantom-ache didn’t get better even after centuries but the archangel adapted. He used his own judgment and tried to give hope when he saw the need. Justice he didn’t even try.

Thus it was the Trickster, bringer of Judgment to the Assholes of America who met the Winchester-brothers. And their souls were burning bright and Gabriel was reminded of his phantom limb. God didn’t speak to him but the archangel (and Norse god and Trickster) saw the mark on Dean’s soul and once he cared to look he knew of their future roles.

Then God nudged him - not exactly speaking but inspiring him to deliver a Message to Sam: “Dean is going to die.” And those three months broke him and Sam both; and less than a year later the siege of Hell started and Gabriel cried for the first time since he was named Loki: the end was nigh.
