„Where's the girl I fell in love with?
Where'd she go?
Where's that kind and gentle princess
Of my dreams?
Where'd she go?” - Voltaire: Where’s The Girl
Desire has always played a cruel game. Making Death long for a silly little girl; a human who couldn’t even accept her in a woman’s shape. She touched her and caressed her long hair before allowing her to wake up. It was not yet Elizabeth’s time.
Death was patient - after a while everything came to her realm - but it still hurt to see her love with another. Elizabeth’s daughter looked at Death without fear just like her mother. The grief-struck Elizabeth was even more beautiful and she turned to Franz Joseph.
Destiny sent her to Desire instead of an advice (it was sometimes a pain to be the second eldest of the Endless. She had no one else to turn to.) Her brother-sister laughed a beautiful, tempting laugh and touched Death’s face with long, elegant fingers. "You’ve lasted quite long, my dear sister. I’ll grant you one bone, if you want it. Another love but this one will love you back fully. And you stop being angry."
Death accepted the terms. It was much easier to deal with Desire when one acknowledged its realm and power - a lesson her silly little brother still didn’t quite grasp. Her longing for Elizabeth diminished but didn’t disappear; and the next time she visited her (in the guise of a tall, dark man) the child Rudolf was there as well. Death caressed the boy and the boy smiled back; asking her to be his friend. She agreed. The crown prince grew up and Death wished she could become a human for more than a day every hundred years. But Rudolf sought her advice and loved her - even when he found his amusements elsewhere.
In the end he couldn’t resist her longer and joined her. Rudolf loved her and she loved him; decades passed in relative happiness before the flame of their love burnt out and Rudolf decided to pass over to the next world.
Then Elizabeth died. And Death talked to her; once more offering everything she had. And because Desire was cruel by its nature, Elizabeth shook her head with a soft smile. "I wish to be free, now more than ever." And Death watched her disappear and remained at the spot long after Elizabeth’s shape was gone.
